Founded over 220 years ago by the movers and shakers of the time, The Athenaeum has been a centre of Influence within the city since its inception. Today the Club is home to a membership comprising of women and men from a wide range of backgrounds who enjoy the benefits that Membership of The Athenaeum has to offer.
The number of Proprietors (full members) is restricted to 500, of whom those under 40 years of age, Ministers of religion and those who have retired from active professional or business life (and have reached state retirement age) pay reduced subscriptions.

The Athenaeum always has a busy calendar of social events for members and their guests. From Presidential dinners which include dining evenings with speakers, the more formal evenings of the annual Burns Night and Annual Dinner but also casual dining evenings, wine tasting evenings, musical events and many more.
From its foundation in 1797, the Library has been one of the most important facilities associated with the Athenaeum. Though not the first library in Liverpool, it is now the only remaining substantial collection in private hands. The collection of about 60,000 volumes has been created over the years by both purchase and donations from Proprietors.

This is a private member's club with a superb library a newsroom and a dining room. It has a history which is integral to liverpool's past. The staff are very welcoming and other members friendly and sociable. I highly recommend interested parties to make further enquiries.

Charming establishment with so much history from over the decades. Well worth a visit if you know a friend or relatives who are members.
The library has documents and maps which are hundreds of years old. It was fascinating to observe such items. The library is the best by far. The club was originally set up by wealthy trade merchants centuries ago who would exchange books and papers from across the Globe and share experiences of travel. There will have been many deals done at this establishment. Originally then it would have been in the tea room until coffee was introduced into the country.

Thanks to the venue and staff. Although the gentleman on the front desk could... Smile and be slightly more welcoming.
