The style of karate taught in Kenshindoryu clubs is called Wado Ryu, which means Peaceful Way School. Wado Ryu is a combination of Okinawan karate and Japanese classical Bujutsu (in particular, Shindo Yoshinryu Jujitsu). It was 'invented' by a Japanese jujitsu master, Otsuka Hironori, who was impressed by the power of Funakoshi's Shotokan karate, but thought that much of its movements and striking were inefficient.
Kenshindoryu Jujutsu Kempo is Japanese-style fighting art, which uses techniques, strategies and principles from the other core arts within the Kenshindoryu Nippon Budo Kyokai - Karate, Judo and Iaido - and incorporates 'gaiden waza' (borrowed techniques) from proven fighting arts as diverse as Boxing, Russian Sambo and Malaysian Silat, as well as other traditional and modern jujutsu styles, to make Kenshindoryu Jujutsu Kempo a highly effective self-defence art.
Traditional Judo styles typically pay great attention to perfection of technique and training as a means of self-improvement and Kenshindoryu Judo is no exception. Although having a distinct self-defence aspect, we believe that aiming for precision means that techniques will still remain effective when that lofty goal is not achieved.
An advanced-level syllabus from the Kenshindoryu, available to Wadoryu, Judo and Jujutsu Dan grades only, examining some of the roots and principles of judo with techniques based around various styles of koryu jujutsu, including Kito Ryu, Tenjin Shinyo Ryu & Yoshin Ryu and their derivatives. Ranks take the underlying Dan grade and add the Zenshosen Judo grade; eg.
The Katana, or Samurai sword, traditionally holds great fascination for those who study the Japanese Budo arts, but practice of the sword 'ways' is fragmented. Kendo being a competitive combat sport using bamboo 'swords' (shinai), Iaido concentrating on drawing the sword, Battojutsu promoting tameshigiri (cutting), and so on.
