A typical commission may include skills from all of the above. We often provide a complete service from targeting and tracking proposed contracts, through estimating and winning schemes, site remeasurement, planning and programming, progress monitoring and settlement of the final account. We are always interested to hear from engineers and quantity surveyors looking to work with us either full/part time or freelance.
If you are interested in working with us please contact us on the email opposite. We have a vacancy for an Engineer full time or part time - contact Tim Hunt or Lesley Rusling for details.

Services
Schofields EQS can provide a wide range of structural services to private individuals, architects and construction firms in the North of England.
From a new support beam required to allow for the removal of a wall to a portal frame for an individual building, from modifications to a roof for a new dormer window to a steel and pre-cast concrete frame for high rise buildings and reinforced concrete raft foundations - Schofields EQS has the experience and a range of computer aided design applications to provide the best design solution.

Working closely with the client and his architects, Oaktree Architectural, we were asked to design the supports for a new first floor loft conversion. The existing structure was unsuitable for the new arrangements and several internal walls were also planned to be removed. We were able to analyse the structure and propose four new large steel frames to provide support and openness for the client's new rooms.
We were initially called to this site to check the temporary supports that had been installed to prevent any further movement of a flat roof and roof lantern in this listed building which had sagged and was leaking whenever it rained. Investigation showed cracked structural timbers with limited historical repairs and wet rot.
In this case a builder that we had worked with before called us in to look at opening up the rear space to a grade I listed building. Here we were asked to remove as many internal walls as possible to create as large as possible area.
We surveyed the site and produced existing drawings, then liaising with the conservation officer for the interaction of the new frame and the listed areas we produced a scheme to remove most of internal supports whilst maintaining the stability of the whole structure.

Asked to review the proposed demolition and rebuild of an existing steel framed building, we surveyed and modelled the building using our structural software. We were able to show that the existing frame could be reused with minor modifications to the frame and the layout of the interior. This reduced the cost of the works to a viable level for the client who then instructed the contractor to commence work.

We have worked with this company for nearly a decade. This involves a significant number of projects. There are many engineers available but these guys do not over design structure and know how to work on historic and existing structures without spending the clients budget in unnecessary over designed structural solutions.
Computer modelling is one thing, but nothing beats experience and a good understanding of existing fabric.
Proven great engineers when working as part of a professional team.

Avoid this company. Requested a Structural Report. I provided details of my concerns along with photos of affected areas. For £450+vat I was expecting a detailed, professional assessment. Instead I received a sparce report which simply repeated what I had already told the engineer. No detail or assessment at all. A complete waste of time and money (after chasing several times, it also took 2 weeks for report to arrive!). When I called for further information and clarification I was told I would have to pay more for further investigation. Save yourself the bother and just go elsewhere.

Quick to respond to an initial enquiry which was positive. However, from there and in brief my experience was as follows:
Failure to listen to my requirements in relation to my specific needs relating to the project in question.
When I pointed this out I did get an eventual response, after I had paid my bill as requested. The response was from an extremely unenthusiastic student who, when I e mailed again to request further information had left the company to continue with his studies. I was told my e mail was forwarded and had assumed therefore my questions would be answered, NO RESPONSE! The
