Belfast Pilates
Belfast Pilates & Physiotherapy is well known throughout Northern Ireland as spinal and sports injury rehabilitation physios with close links to both GP and Consultants. We are all Chartered Physiotherapists and APPI Pilates Instructors who assess and treat back pain, neck pain, sports injuries, musculoskeletal conditions, joint problems, arthritic pain, headaches, postural aches and pain.

We teach Mat-work and Reformer Pilates both in group classes and 1:1 sessions. Pilates offered precision, awareness of ones position, and soon more flexibility came. An increasing number of techniques were on offer leading to greater control of ones own body. Pilates promotes and maintains the protective alignment of muscle groups.

Belfast Pilates & Physiotherapy is the leading centre for the delivery of specialised Physio Led Pilates programmes and classes in Belfast. It was started by Chartered Physiotherapists Gillian Duggan and Sonia McCay. They have over 30 years clinical physiotherapy experience between them and are fully certified APPI Pilates instructors.
We have two modern, bright studio gyms. Studio 1 holds up to 12 people in a class for mat-work Pilates. Studio 2 has room for up to 10 mat-work participants and is also home to our seven, state of the art, Allegro 2 (Balanced Body in circle) Reformers. At busier times there are also public carparks at Parkgate Avenue and Grampian Avenue which are all within walking distance.
At the clinic we have two Pilates studios offering a range of Pilates classes. All levels of Pilates are catered for, beginner through to intermediate/ advanced. Specialist ante natal, mother and baby as well as dedicated kids Pilates classes are also available. Together with our usual Pilates classes we now also have seven, top of the range, Allegro 2 Reformer machines (Balanced Body circle).
Over the many years we have provided Pilates Classes to beginners through to advanced clients we usually get asked the same questions by any new client wishing to join. So we have done our best to compile the most common queries we receive below. The APPI stands for Australian Physiotherapy Pilates Institute.
At Belfast Pilates & Physiotherapy we are well known for our Physiotherapy treatment and Pilates rehabilitation for spinal conditions. We are proud to be endorsed by Mr Paul Nolan, Consultant Spinal Surgeon. However as Chartered Physiotherapists with a wealth of previous NHS and private practice experience in Orthopaedics and Sports Injuries we assess, diagnose and treat a wide range of soft tissue and peripheral joint injuries.

I have been going here for many years now and cannot speak highly enough of both the Pilates and the Physio that they provide (and let me assure you I have tried many others!). The team is amazing! They have managed to keep classes going throughout the pandemic via Zoom and if you need physio they have all the safety checks in place and wear full PPE. Fully deserving of the 5 star rating

I think I have had Pilates classes with almost every instructor, and they're all brilliant. I have joined ante-natal classes for 2 pregnancies and weekly Pilates with Gillian to manage RA, which has kept me mobile, flexible and strong. Absolutely essential now that I'm working at a less than perfect set up at home! Also highly recommend as physio practice.

Gillian introduced me to the world of Pilates about 12 years ago and I love it. I've been to classes with most of the team over the years. Having also tried non physio led classes there is a huge difference. Classes at BP are very well structured and varied. You use different equipment each week and no two weeks are the same. I always recommend the classes to everyone I know as they have helped me so much. I guarantee you will enjoy Pilates and stick with it as I have :)

This is a wonderful team of highly skilled professionals who really, really care about people’s health and wellbeing. Their 1-2-1 physiotherapy and group Pilates classes have got me through several difficult conditions and injuries, including during and after pregnancy. I can’t recommend them highly enough to anyone.

I was referred here by a specialist for a physical ailment. As a consequence of that treatment I have been attending mat and reformer classes religiously since. I am stronger, more stable and flexible with all my movements. Even in these challenging times, the zoom classes are more than a work out. They have become a necessity in a more sedentary lifestyle. My classes at Belfast Pilates have strengthened my core muscles and improved my posture, helping me, a professional musician, prevent playing injuries.Sonia inspires and motivates and keeps her classes very varied and challenging. I had terrible posture and attending Pilates has really helped me to stop slouching, it's probably saved my back. It's also strengthened my core considerably for running/cycling. It's been so enjoyable I decided to keep it in my weekly routine. Jean is a great instructor! Highly recommend.

Ive been attending both classes and occasional physiotherapy sessions here for about 4 years and it's been fantastic. The Pilates classes are led with spot-on cueing for form which is vital, they are always fun and the teacher (Sonia) inspiring and focused. The classes have been a lifesaver during the pandemic. Can't recommend them enough!

Best decision I could’ve made! Every class is fun and you can take it at your own level, and after working sitting at a desk on a computer all day, every exercise helps loosen up my back. Cannot recommend it enough.
