Services
We are a family run butchers in Cambridge that has been trading for over 25 years and have over 50 years experience in the meat industry. We sell a wide variety of quality meat and source our products from the best English Farms. As well as meat, poultry and game we also have a wide range of other products such as fresh fruit and vegetables, free range eggs, delicatessen and an extensive range of South African produce.
We take great pride in our beef products, sourcing our cattle from English Farms that are all Eblex and Red Tractor approved. Our beef comes from Humphreys and are all Free Range Rare Breed and are grazing on selected grass, hay and silage and are produced to excellent standards.
These rare breeds take much longer to mature and grow compared to commercial cattle and this does only enhance the quality and flavour of the meat which is why many top chefs use it.Through this company, we have been able to source a great variety of high-quality rare breed beef which we find very exciting as we are their only stockist in Cambridge.

Our Suffolk Lambs come from farms who pride themselves on the traditional methods of sheep farming with all lambs grazing on a mixture of nutritious grasses, clovers and beneficial herbs with no feed concentrates or artificial additives. The Suffolk evolved from mating Norfolk Horn ewes with Southdown rams.
All Packington pigs are born outdoors at Packington with the sows living their whole lives outside, with plenty of space to roam, wallow and be sociable. At Packington, they ensure their pigs live stress-free, by always providing them with what they need, when they need it. By providing mud wallows in the summer, fresh bedding, high-quality food, a plentiful supply of water and lots of tender loving care, they produce healthy, happy pigs.
They are reared on Freedom Food approved farms to strict RSPCA welfare standards. The chickens are reared in small flocks and have far more space available to them then other more intensely reared birds and also enjoy enriched conditions such as perching on straw bales and natural periods of darkness.

It's nice to see a butcher's shop on the high street.
I bought some bacon from here.
Service - I didn't feel welcome
Price - paid a premium for an average offering. I don't mind paying for a better product. At least the bacon was cut to a nice thickness. See below.
Product - Nice thickness- very waterey - couldn't get a decent colour on it.
Clean shop.
Three stars is about right.
The pale bacon inside my crispy tiger roll visually told me I should have made the detour and gone that extra mile to a butcher I knew that sold good quality and fairly priced bacon.
Edit: I just remembered there

Awful staff. Whenever I try call, they get so rude with me immediately. Today I called and asked "Where am I through to?" because they spoke so fast when answering then I was met with "Well where do you want to be through to?!" I repeated myself and asked where I was through to and he said "well who am I talking to?!" , I said my name and that I'm not sure I'm through to the right place and asked again, who is speaking and he grunted at me and hang up. Instead of just saying Cowlings Butcher.
Don't bother supporting them because all you are to them is a number. Personally I feel decriminalisated

The quality of meat is generally good, but it is very expensive compared to other comparable independent butchers in Cambridge and the staff are not at all interested in explaining the various cuts of meat which are available. Furthermore, they describe themselves as "family butchers", but seem to work rather short hours.
UPDATE - following the merchant's update
below
Your update has surprised me greatly.
I have never sought to pay by credit card. This appears to be a case of mistaken identity. I have always paid in cash as I am aware of the £5 limit. I have even paid cash when purchasing

Tried this flash looking place for some bacon yesterday...should have gone to one stop next door, 3 quid for the smallest loin eye I have ever seen (chef 20+ yrs) wrapped with the largest bar fat I have seen! once removed 8 tiny half rashers!
looks like they were closing up at lunch time, didn't get to see the meat or would never have bought , and like many other reviews here was not welcoming, no smile and I couldn't get out of there quick enough!
Premium price, flash packet that's it! wont return.
I notice the owner replies to thank 5 star reviews????
the whole point of this is for you to

They claim to be a 'friendly family run butchers', but that is very far from the truth. They are extremely rude and made me feel like I was wasting their time. (the guy behind the counter was reading the paper when I arrived). I wanted advice about meat for a recipe and he didn't want to help me with it, just pointed to some meat and said 'this will do'. I will not be using them again. I actually found it to be quite an intimidating experience. If I could give this no stars I would.

It is a shock that this family ran business doesn't care for their customers, One of the males (younger) behind the counter is extremely rude and quite arrogant, we have been a regular customer for 7 years and put up with his moods over these year because of support for local businesses and the other great staff members. Last month was the breaking point and we are now sourcing our meat from another butcher even though we have travel a bit further. Very disappointed to have to write this. One star given because cannot proceed with no stars.

I can only describe my experience, which resulted in me not even buying meat so I can't comment on the quality of the meat itself. I rang up the day before with a request for baby back ribs so I could follow a specific smoking recipe. I was told it would be fine, so I drive to pick them up before work and he pulls out a completely different cut of meat that includes all the surrounding meat and loin. I completely understand that butchers often don't want to sell just the ribs because of the lack of popularity and then the difficulty in selling the surrounding meat, this is why I rung ahead. He
