Shaun Barr Garden Services
Renowned for maintaining gardens using a nature-friendly approach, I'm passionate about creating beautifully planted outdoor spaces for you and your family to enjoy. Catering for gardens large and small -- from bee-friendly window boxes to creating and maintaining wild flower meadows - my aim is to make and maintain gardens that are a pleasure for you to spend time in and that also work in harmony with nature.

We wanted a more wildlife-friendly garden and contacted Shaun after being shown his work by friends of ours. It's taken time to develop but we now enjoy an much more colourful, flower-rich lawn as well as bee and butterfly-rich borders. Although only a tiny garden Shaun has worked with us in transforming what we have.

Nature is in serious trouble. From huge declines in insects, including pollinators such as bees and butterflies, to birds and mammals. Even once common animals, such as the much-loved hedgehog has suffered catastrophic reductions in populations. We've lost 97% of our wild flower meadows, countless ancient woodlands and thousands of miles of hedgerows - habitats that wildlife depend upon to survive.
Soothing yet invigorating and refreshing, the health benefits of drinking peppermint tea are well-known, but if you only ever drink it made from teabags you are missing out on the 'real deal'. In fact, the difference in taste and flavour is so much better when using fresh leaves that once you've tried it you'll always want to drink tea this way!
With hedgehog numbers in the UK dropping by a staggering two-thirds in the last 20 years, our gardens could make a real difference to their continued survival. The good news is that creating the ideal hedgehog habitat is actually very easy to do. Hedgehogs need to roam and tend to cover 1-2km every night, which our garden fences prevent them from doing.
If you can offer a variety of foods you will increase your chances of attracting different species. Please ensure feeders are cleaned with hot water and mild disinfectant fortnightly or so, to avoid the risk of birds being exposed to disease. A good quality bird mixture is a great place to start, ideally made up of sunflower seeds, flaked maize, and peanut granules.
Any tree in your garden is a hugely beneficial resource for so much of our wildlife, providing food, shelter and shade as well as cover from predators. But here's a list of the trees that I believe are among the very best choices you can make for wildlife. Every garden should have at least one!

Sometimes called Pussy Willow, it is best known for its beautiful gold-yellow male catkins which when ripe are a fabulous early source of pollen and nectar for bees and other insects, including some butterflies. The goat willow is host to a variety of different caterpillars, which in turns makes it a valuable 'food factory' for parenting birds to feed their young.
