The City and East London Bereavement Service (CELBS) has been delivering specialist bereavement services to residents of Tower Hamlets and the City for over 30 years. The service was founded by Dr Colin Murray Parkes OBE, MD, FRCPPsych., LLD an internationally renowned expert in the field of bereavement and a Consultant Psychiatrist who was working at The Royal London Hospital at the time in the 1980s.
He felt there was a need to support those who had been bereaved to find ways to cope with their loss. The needs Colin identified then and the needs today remain, and we continue to deliver high quality bereavement services to residents of Tower Hamlets and people whose loved one died in a Barts Health NHS Trust hospital.

Services
Grief may bring many changes which are often difficult and painful. For a variety of reasons, many people find it is helpful to talk with one of our counsellors who are specifically trained to support you and help you begin to talk about your loss and the impact this has for you. There is not right or wrong time to access counselling.
CELBS receives no statutory funding and relies solely on the grants, donations and funding generated from the counselling sessions. We are grateful to The Marie Celeste Samaritan Society for their continued funding. This allows for clients whose family or friend died at one of the Barts NHS hospitals but live outside of Tower Hamlets to access up to 12 sessions of counselling for free.
Bereavement and grief have a significant impact on employees ability to function on a day to day basis. At any one time 2 in 10 people you interact with on a daily basis in the workplace are grieving. 22% of British adults who were employed at the time when they were bereaved of a close family member, said they did not feel supported by their employer.
The counselling room is down a walkway to the left of The Gallery Cafe, look out for number 15 & 17 Old Ford Road, go through the gate and down the driveway until you come to 2 doors with some buzzers. Please note there is no waiting room, so please endeavour to arrive as close to your session time as possible.
