Founded and based in Blackburn, Lancashire, we remain a family-controlled company and this is reflected in the way in which we approach our guests.

Thwaites starts expansion after James Pickup and Co Wines and Spirits and Henry Shaw are purchased. Thwaites Dray horses are awarded freedom of Blackburn after 25 years service to the community. The North Lakes hotel opens in Penrith, one of the first hotels in the UK to offer a large indoor pool to guests.
Back in the day the Shire Horses earned their keep delivering Thwaites top quality ales to local pubs in the Blackburn area. Those days may be long gone but we still treasure our 4-legged friends and all they stand for. They have a hectic calendar making personal appearances at our hotels, pubs, inns and lodges up and down the country.
Pubs are already under a range of tax pressures and research suggests that more pubs will close if beer duty increases. Long Live the Local is a campaign to try and get beer duty frozen in the next Budget. Last year we got 100k signatures on the petition, this year we're aiming to double it! Every great evening finishes with a goodnight.
