I would like to express my gratitude for the change that your counselling has made in my life and our relationship, to say that I was scared to attend counselling because I thought that I would have curled up in a corner and cried not being able to speak; I now cry with joy and not out of frustration.
Addictions can allow people a temporary escape from their problems, and can develop from many activities; alcohol, drugs, eating, gambling, shopping, sex and use of the internet. Stigma surrounds the word 'addiction' which is an inability to stop repetitive behaviour in spite of the harmful consequences.
Anger - you've probably experienced it at some point and to varying degrees in your life. It's a natural human emotion like happiness, sadness and fear, and for most people it stays within a safe and healthy range. For some, however, frequent and intense episodes of anger can seriously interfere with everyday life and lead to destructive behaviour.
Anxiety is a simplistic blanket term which covers a wide range of problems from the temporary effects of stress to panic attacks, compulsions, phobias or debilitating nervous illness previously known as 'nervous breakdown'. Common in all these complaints is the overwhelming effect of the body producing too much adrenaline resulting in physical symptoms which affect daily life.
For most of us, bereavement will be the most psychologically distressing experience we will ever face. Grief is what we feel when somebody we love dies. The death of a significant person is a devastating loss. Everyone experiences grief differently and there is no 'normal' or 'right' way to grieve.
