One of their advisors recommended a Stamp Duty Mitigation Scheme. They assured me that if the Inland Revenue didn't come asking for the Stamp Duty by X date I was in the clear. Of course a couple of years after X date the Inland Revenue challenged the scheme (that was supposed to be foolproof, robust, devised by lawyers etc.) and the company managing the scheme didn't even try to fight it. They threw up their arms and let all their clients take the hit. Of course this had serious financial implications for me at short notice.
