We are the longest established optical practice in Wetherby, having been set up soon after the start of the NHS in 1948. The building was previously Wetherby Conservative Club, and we are located in what was the billiards room! Originally under the name of E.C.Tyrell, it was changed to Appleson's in 1987.
In 1999, Paul Appleson took over the running of the practice from his father Raymond who was also an optometrist. In 2013 we had a refit, doubled the size of the practice, putting in an additional consulting room, a larger reception and dispensing area, and we launched our specialist eye clinic.

We aim to provide you with the best vision possible, protect your eye health and give you expert advice, recommendations and treatments. Measurement of vision, optical refraction to determine spectacle prescription, eye coordination. Peripheral visual field analysis, and eye pressure measurement (contact tonometry - no puff of air!).
As well as our general eye/sight testing service, we offer a range of specialist services for patients who require diagnosis, treatment and monitoring of a range of eye conditions. Our experienced staff provide that extra special care for those who need it and their carers. We adapt our approach to the needs and abilities of the patient, and provide extra reassurance before, during and after all the eye test procedures. People with learning disabilities have a higher incidence of eye and vision problems, but may not know they have a sight problem and they may not be able to tell others.
For some patients, their vision is not adequate for their daily needs, despite the best spectacle correction. A thorough low vision assessment can be offered to identify the degree of visual impairment, and what additional support is required. This may be through advice about lighting and contrast, use of optical magnifiers, computer technology, or referral to other organisations that can offer help in adapting to reduced vision.
We want to ensure that you get the most out of your visit to the practice, and that any specific needs are catered for. If you have specific information or communication support needs, relating to a disability, sensory loss or other impairment e.g. Allow around an hour for our optometrist to undertake the necessary eye examination and for any additional tests that may be required.
