Established in 1847, H L Hawes & Son is a privately owned Independent Funeral Directors with a funeral office in Barkingside IG6 1QE, Chingford E4 6AG and Leytonstone E11 1HR. A funeral is one of life's most personal events and we understand how important it is for each family to discuss, plan and agree upon the funeral service.

Our involvement and support begins the moment the bereaved family contacts us, and continues beyond the day of the funeral. H L Hawes & Son is committed to upholding professional standards and delivery of excellence in 'client service' and 'aftercare support'. We pride ourselves on our high standard of deceased care and genuine understanding of our clients' individual and cultural needs.
Services
At that time Henry Lawrence Hawes was a coal merchant in the East End, and as so often happened to men owning premises and transport at that time, he was called upon to arrange and conduct funerals when necessary. Life in those days was tough, and as 55% of babies born died before their third birthday, it is of little surprise that the first recorded funeral was that of a child.
Many of our staff have been with us for a good number of years, in fact, they aggregate more than 150 years of service with our business. This level of staff retention allows us to provide a professional caring service to returning families who will have met our staff on previous occasions. Our funeral staff have successfully completed Health & Safety courses and many have received First Aid training.
The National Society of Allied and Independent Funeral Directors (SAIF) is a trade association whose members are all independent funeral directors - http://www.saif.org.uk/. The funeral service they offer is not part of a national or international conglomerate or chain, but is privately owned and managed.
The Code of Practice Principles which set out in detail the high level of service clients' can expect. We co-operate at all times with Trading Standards Offices, Citizens Advice Bureau, consumer support groups, and any other organisation representing clients' in the resolution of complaints or disputes, including The Independent Funeral Arbitration Scheme.
Most deaths take place in one of three places, either at home, in hospital or a nursing home. When someone dies at home, the first contact should be the family doctor who will normally call at the house and, if satisfied as to the cause of death, will issue the Medical Certificate of Cause of Death.
