Smith Roddam Solicitors
We are following the guidance and advice issued by the Government, Public Health England and the NHS. As a result, we have had to make urgent changes to the way we operate day to day including how we staff our offices and as to how we communicate with you and others. Our offices are now closed to the public, but you can still contact us via telephone, e-mail, post and by you self-delivering documents to our office letterboxes.

In the coming days/weeks we may not be able to return telephone calls and/or emails as we would otherwise, and we request your patience and understanding during this unprecedented period. Smith Roddam Solicitors are solicitors in County Durham who combine the very best legal advice with exceptional customer service.
Services
When people are unable to make their own decisions because of a mental illness, other people may be required to make decisions on their behalf. Sometimes there may be disagreements surrounding these decisions and that is where the Court of Protection can help. The Court of Protection protects the rights of people who are unable to make their own decisions relating to the management of their property, affairs, or welfare.
Without an Advance Decision or Lasting Power of Attorney (LPA) in place, the only way you can have a say about the care of an incapacitated individual is to apply for Deputyship through the Court of Protection. Our professional team can support you throughout the process.

No-one likes to think of what would happen if a sudden illness or accident was to strike, or if their health was to decline to a point where they could no longer make decisions about their health.Unfortunately, these situations do occur and it can leave families feeling at a loss as to what to do. Fortunately, there is a way to protect those you love by becoming an appointed deputy.
As citizens, we rely on government to provide a range of social services and healthcare systems that provide us with adequate care and a safe environment to live in. When these systems fail, you can turn to Smith Roddam Solicitors. Social services and healthcare providers have a duty of care to provide every person with necessary care services, as prescribed by their health.
When a family member or loved one loses the ability to make their own decisions, this can be especially distressing if there is no Lasting Power of Attorney (LPA) in place. Smith Roddam Solicitors can help you attain the same powers to make decisions on behalf of a loved one by applying for Deputyship through the Court of Protection.
Disputes are not pleasant. When two parties have a disagreement, it can often result in damaging behaviour and allegations. No one enjoys falling out but sadly, it happens. At Smith Roddam Solicitors, we work with you to find the best outcome - a resolution that avoids undue unpleasantness, unnecessary costs and prolonged anxiety and worry.

I had the misfortune to deal with this firm on the other side of a house sale transaction (ie they were acting for the buyer). The buyer had cash and the house was vacant. Nevertheless, it took them an inordinate length of time to deal with the paperwork - getting on for 3 months. Avoid unless you are transacting at leisure.
