Virtualisation, in computing terms, is the creation of a virtual (rather than actual) device or resource, such as a hardware platform, operating system, a storage device or network. At the heart of every business is their IT infrastructure. To ensure commercial success the datacentre needs to be running at optimised performance and demanding business.
Many are using virtualization as an opportunity to rationalise the application estate and simplify complex hardware environments. Savings in both hardware and support is the objective of many organisations. Optimising costs, doing more with less and doing it better is the key aim across the sectors in 2013, and virtualisation has an important part to play in optimising costs, through the continued virtualisation of the IT estate.
Improve the efficiency and availability of IT resources and applications through virtualization. Start by eliminating the old "one server, one application" model and run multiple virtual machines on each physical machine. Free your IT admins from spending so much time managing servers rather than innovating.
While virtualization in general can bring you many advantages, VMware virtualization solutions are built on a robust foundation proven in production environments and chosen by over 250,000 customers, including 100% of the Fortune 100. Built on VMware vSphere, the industry's most advanced virtualization platform, we enable solutions from the desktop to the datacenter, utilising existing IT investments.
Microsoft Hyper-V Server 2008 R2 is the hypervisor-based server virtualization product that allows customers to consolidate workloads onto a single physical server. In contrast to our full platform server offering Windows Server 2008 R2, Microsoft Hyper-V Server is a stand-alone product.

Some of the key features that are available in Microsoft Hyper-V Server 2008 R2 SP1 include dynamic memory, live migration, cluster shared volume support and expanded processor and memory support for host systems.Hyper-V Server 2008 R2 is a good solution for organisations who want to consolidate on a single physical server or have low utilisation infrastructure workloads, departmental applications, and branch office workloads.
