Generally counselling helps people improve their sense of wellbeing, alleviate their distress, resolve their crises, increase their ability to solve problems, see other opinions and empowers them to make their own decisions. Psychotherapy may be more helpful for psychological problems that have built up over the years.
Counselling and Psychotherapy helps people struggling with everyday issues who may need additional support to help them through challenging events in their life or identify negative patterns of relating or behaviour in order to develop more positive strategies and patterns going forward. My role is to help you make sense of what is happening and not just label your experience.

Services
I recognize that people come to therapy for lots of different reasons and want different things. I understand that people face different issues and pressures and have different tolerances and resources. I offer counselling supervision for student and qualified counsellors and psychotherapists from my practice in central Edinburgh and at home near Dunbar, East Lothian.
When you first make contact we will arrange an appointment for an initial session, the aim of which will be for us to think together about your needs and decide whether therapy may be helpful for you. I respond to all queries promptly and in confidence. The first session allows us to meet and decide if we want to work together and gives you some time to tell me your story.
Sessions for couples lasts 60 minutes and allows time and space for both parties to talk, to be heard and listened to. My role as the counsellor is to ensure that both of you are heard and allowed space to talk. Couple counselling is about your relationship and the issues you have with each other within that relationship.
