The heart of Russells Restaurant is a magnificent timbered tithe barn, Grade II listed as being of architectural and historical Importance. The barn has been dated by experts as being originally built in 1372, so making this one of the oldest surviving buildings in the Chelmsford area.
As you walk in to the restaurant, you will be amazed; the spectacular high vaulted ceiling with its magnificent beams, you will be greeted by staff that will do anything to make your visit just perfect. To the left as you walk in is a tastefully decorated lounge area where drinks and nibbles are served.

Gone down hill a lot over the past 3/4 years. Staff are young and here just for a pay check, no passion in restaurant.
Menu is dated and been roughly the same ingredients for 5 years now!
Food isn’t ala carte but set up for shelf life. Beef carpaccio? Tart fine from every menu in 10 years. Chicken supreme? On a ala carte menu for £16.50 WHO are you kidding!
Sort it out or your restaurant will fall even lower than it already is
- owner had feedback removed on trip advisor by crying to them, kinda shows how people give a review and he acts like a child

First time visit to this restaurant; and we can't wait to return. Everything we ate was delicious, and that's coming from fussy eaters! Cannot fault it. Yes, it's not cheap (more for a special occasion), but I'd rather pay a bit more and get really lovely food and wine. Barry made us feel like valued customers, and the chef came out so that we could tell him how much we loved the food. All in all would definitely recommend.

Excellent food and wine. Always a lovely atmosphere, staff are eagre to please. Lovely characterful building, bar back wall packed tight. It is pricey, for a meal with a few drinks I expect to pay £60 a head, it's a once in a while treat for us. It's what I call, a proper cloth napkin restaurant (non of your paper serviettes here!)

There are so many amazing hidden gems in Essex, and Russell's Restaurant is one of them.
The building dates back to 1372, and is a converted barn. Before it was a restaurant, it was a woodshed, where my grandfather would go to buy wood. The restaurant has kept some of the original features, like the beams and high vaulted ceiling, which gives it a very rustic feel.
The food is mostly French inspired, but mostly locally sourced (something I always like to see!)
For my starter, I had the seared king scallops, which were served with a pea and asparagus compote, black pudding and black truffle

We went for my Birthday dinner. Russell's is local to us but for some reason it was not on our eating out circuit!!
Pleasant bar area as you go in, we had a few drinks at the bar and perused the Menu. So many yummy things to choose from! There is a set 2 or 3 course menu, very reasonably priced, or you can choose to go a'la carte, which we did.
Very pretty restaurant with sparkling glasses and pristine tables. Food was all lovely.
A very, very nice evening, good ambience, not stuffy, would suggest you try it!
It's definitely on the circuit now!
