From the dense habitats of South America to the frozen seas of the Arctic in every corner of the globe there is a need to access areas where conventional craft cannot reach. With the global environment changing at record pace through rising sea levels and extreme weather events the future need to travel over and transition between land and sea will become more crucial than ever.
The concept of an "air-cushion" vehicle was first explored by the British engineer Sir John Thornycroft in the 1870s as a way of reducing the drag experienced by boats using a pocket of air between the hull and water. In the 1930s Russian aerodynamicist Vladimir Lekov took this a step further, experimenting with the "sidewall" hovercraft which proved to be fast but unreliable.
Hovercraft are used for rescue, commercial, military and paramilitary applications to transport, save and protect lives across the world's most challenging environments. Hovercraft are amphibious platforms that can be built to overcome the specific challenges each user faces. This has meant that within every industry where there is a need to operate within low infrastructure, isolated locations hovercraft are used to succeed.
Hovering above the terrain they travel over; crossing shallow water, tidal estuaries, mud flats, sand banks, rapids, frozen seas and lakes hovercraft provide fast, direct access to remote locations. Hovercraft flying up beaches and unprepared shorelines to land exactly where they are needed without the requirement for infrastructure to connect the transport to the location.
Hovercraft provide militaries with a platform capable of delivering troops, logistics and vehicles over some of the most remote, inaccessible coastlines of the world. By lifting the hull above the surface physical obstacles can be overcome and a direct course to destinations can made. Hovercraft will accomplish any task performed by a fast boat, but will also operate where no boat can venture.
