Services
The special challenge of this heart hospital was to provide large clear spaces with minimum obstructions. The hollow block slab system also gave flexibility in partitioning the hospital. A combination of rubble masonry, concrete slabs and hypar shell roofs were used to meet the functional requirements within the local context.
The low cost Aranya township at Indore was planned to provide affordable habitat for 60,000 people. It used a site and service approach to serve primarily the economically weaker section of the society within a balanced matrix of other income groups. Special emphasis was laid on designing the layout in relation to infrastructure networks.
The concept of Slum Networking was developed by HPCE to dramatically improved the lives of the 450,000 slum-dwellers of Indore city, which amounted to about 30% of the total population. The project integrated both physical works and community development. HPCE designed the civil infrastructure comprising roads, sewerage, water supply, storm drainage, earthworks, landscaping, street lighting and community buildings.
The Ghogha Project in Gujarat developed and implemented methodologies for a new demand- responsive approach for rural water supply and sanitation. HPCE was invited to replicate in the rural areas its previous experiences of Slum Networking. The transition is natural as there are many similarities between the poor urban areas and the rural communities in terms of level of infrastructure, settlement patterns and community structures.
