I qualified from Aberdeen University in 1981, trained with firms in Aberdeen and moved to Elgin in 1985. Partnership in the Firm of Dean Thomson & Co., followed and for over 20 years I have specialised in Family Law. In 2008 I decided to form the Firm of Michael Kemp Family Law to provide a specialist family law Firm in Elgin which would continue to offer Legal Aid to clients.
I am a member of the Family Law Association, an Organisation which promotes resolving cases in as courteous and non confrontational manner where possible. My hope is that I can make my experience available to you as my client. I have the support of experienced and dedicated staff. Pauline Brennan is a qualified Paralegal in Family Law.

Services
When a relationship breaks down we appreciate it is a time of great uncertainty and when you require support and understanding as well as sound legal advice. We are aware that the initial decision to consult a Solicitor is daunting however our philosophy is to provide advice which will then allow you to make your own decisions regarding how to proceed.
We appreciate that in circumstances involving violence or abuse negotiations are inappropriate and protective orders may be required from the court promptly. Such orders can involve exclusion of one party from the home; interdicts against violent behaviour with powers of arrest attached or orders preventing the removal of children.
We appreciate that issues involving children can be extremely stressful and difficult to resolve. We will always attempt to place the child at the centre of negotiations regarding the arrangements for their future. Whenever possible we attempt to encourage our clients to make practical proposals regarding the arrangements for children and to reach a settlement acceptable to both parties and in the best interests of the children.
For Solicitors the provision of Civil Legal Aid can, on occasions, be frustrating. Fees paid under legal aid are significantly less than the fees solicitors are entitled to charge private clients. The bureaucracy involved in making an application and accounting to the Scottish Legal Aid Board also discourages more and more solicitors each year from providing this service.
