The Institution aims to advance the science and practice of train control and communications engineering within the industry, and to maintain high standards of knowledge and competence within the profession.
The overriding purpose in doing this is for the public benefit, to help ensure the safe and efficient movement of people and freight by rail. The IRSE is the professional institution for all those engaged in or associated with railway signalling and telecommunications, train control, traffic management and allied professions. EurIng Ian Bridges is our new President supported by Andy Knight our Senior Vice President and Steve Boshier our Junior Vice President.
The IRSE Licensing Scheme provides assurance about the competence of individuals to carry out technical safety-critical or safety-related work on signalling and railway telecommunications equipment and systems. It provides an accepted cross-industry benchmark of competence for personnel carrying out a range of activities from maintenance through design, installation, testing, project engineering and senior technical management.
To obtain an IRSE licence, you will be assessed to check that you have the relevant skills and knowledge, and that you are competent and safe to carry out licensable work. Step 1: Choose a licence category that fits the work you have been doing or are being trained to do.
Step 2: Read through the licence's competence assessment checklist (CAC) to see which criteria you can already show that you meet, and which you may need additional training or experience for.Step 3: Prepare your logbook. Make sure it contains evidence of your work experience, training, mentoring and qualifications, as it will be used during your assessments.

The IRSE licence checker allows any employer, agency or member of the public to check that a licence is valid. This helps the fight against fraudulent licences. To check whether a licence is valid, simply enter the surname and full licence number (including the three 0's) into the tool below and press "check licence".
