Whaligoe, is a small port which was prospected by Thomas Telford in 1786 during his tour of northern fishing harbours for the British Fishing Society. So much of Caithness is hidden from the casual visitor; the abundant wildlife, stunning coastal scenery, precarious cliff-top castle ruins, mysterious brochs and standing stones - we have it all.
The Pilot House is a small iconic building which overlooks Wick Harbour and the Bay, built in 1908 it was used as a pilot station for the local ships pilots, closed in 1953 it was abandoned until 1974 when local historian Ian Sutherland decided that it needed to be preserved so he acquired the building and began to repair and restore it.
Caithness is often referred to as "The Lowlands beyond the Highlands" or "The land of the big sky". There are few locations in the UK, which can match this area for outstanding natural beauty. The scenery is spectacular and full of contrasts. Craggy cliffs sheltering peaceful harbours; unspoilt beaches settled within a rugged coastline; moorland wilderness with majestic mountains on the horizon.

This hotel may appear old-fashioned and homely, even quirky, but don't let that put you off. You'll get an enthusiastic and warm welcome and be served with a smile. It's very decent food as well, promptly served. A good pub meal that offers value.

Day 5 of our NC500 trip and we stayed in this absolute hidden gem!
Grand and beautiful 4 post bed which was incredibly comfortable, bath big enough for 2 which was delightful, i had a glass of prosecco in the tub, felt very extra! No shame haha. We had dinner here too, the food was delicious and good size portions, we were well fed and the lady working made us feel welcome and was so helpful 😊 definitely planning on returning next time we do the coast 😍

Comfortable bed. Free WiFi, but no password offered. Breakfast, well £7.50 for a filled roll does not a breakfast make. Coffee and tea in the room, yes but, those little milk things where you need to use all 4 for a dash of colour and then discover there are no more. Yeah, no coffee for me after that one. All I can say is, thank goodness I was here for one night, and that was only for work, and work paid for it.

Nice hotel but highly unfriendly and unwelcoming stuff!!
The first thing we were told was:
No breakfast because you were booked through booking.com?!?
They do not offer any information in regards of possible breakfast or dinner or hotel facilities: restaurant, bar…
The room had a small issue with annoying noise from bathroom (vent or light)- the respond from the boss( no introduction at all)
If you don’t like the room find another hotel!!!!!????!!!
Big fuss when I ask for a second small towel (two guests with only one towel?!)-we provide only one , what’s the problem?
This is our fifth

Didn't stay but ate dinner there. Small menu with typical home made pub grub type meals. Fish n chips were delish and decent portion. Ideal for a bite to eat when stopping in the area for a night.
