Robert Comber the founder, known to all as Bob, was born in 1880 in Sharpthorne, West Sussex. Comber Builders' in Sharpthorne. The builder's yard, along with a carpenters shop, was situated beside 'The Black Path', a pathway on top of the railway tunnel that lead from Top Road down to the Bluebell railway station.

With a steady stream of work, including a contract at Finden in 1927 to build council houses for Sussex County Council, the business prospered and in 1935 it moved from The Black Path site along to 'Downsview Yard', the site we occupy today, where a larger carpenters shop was built and the sign now read: 'R.

Since being established in 1906, Comber & Son has remained a family run company and we pride ourselves in maintaining the traditions, values and integrity of yesteryear business which is so often forgotten in this day and age. We offer a service of the highest standard and our experience over 100 years has undoubtedly stood the test of time.
The residential and domestic sector of construction is where Comber & Son excel. As a company, we appreciate and understand that it is much more than just a building or a house that we are constructing; it is a home. Together with our dedicated team of skilled craftsmen and operatives, we endeavour to uphold our ideology of integrity, both with our work practice and ethically with our client relationships.
Comber & Son have undertaken numerous and varied commercial projects over the years, including factory, warehouse and office construction, through to helicopter hangars. We work closely and regularly with Housing Associations and Property Management organisations that require maintenance, both structural and cosmetic, to their extensive property portfolios.
Comber & Son have worked for over 60 years within the educational sector throughout Sussex, Surrey and Kent, and due to our experience, we recognise the importance of project management.

With the nature of construction associated with schools and educational establishments often being that of adhering to a strict timeframe and budget, it is key that our Contract Managers develop strong relationships with the clients in order to fulfil and complete a projects schedule.
