Vajraloka Buddhist Meditation Centre (founded in 1979) is one of the foremost meditation retreat centres in the UK. The focus at Vajraloka is the practice and teaching of meditation, with the aim of awakening to the true nature of things, the ultimate goal of Buddhism. Situated beautifully amidst the gently rolling hills of North Wales, Vajraloka has now been running retreats for over 30 years.
The retreat centre is run by a team of Buddhist practitioners, each with many years experience of meditation, and of running Buddhist meditation retreats. If you value Vajraloka, please consider giving whatever you can to help us maintain the place and work of the team during lockdown. We want to reopen Vajraloka in good shape, as soon as it's possible to do so.

Services
Vajraloka was started by several members of the Triratna Buddhist Order (formerly known as the Western Buddhist Order) in 1979. The old Welsh stone farm buildings, known as 'Ty'n-y-ddol' or 'the house in the meadow', which became Vajraloka, were then in a semi-derelict state. Over time, the resident team and helpers gradually converted them all into the comfortable and well-appointed facilities that you will see today.
Vajraloka Meditation Centre is run by a team of men who have decided to live here in North Wales and dedicate themselves to their meditation practice. The team is known for its friendliness and hospitality and a warm welcome always awaits anyone who decides to come and join us on retreat. All Order members on the team share responsibility for leading retreats and teaching meditation whilst everyone helps with the day-to-day running of the centre.
To book online, please select a retreat from our retreat calendar page and then use the book online button. You can choose to pay full or concessionary rate or, to book a provisional place on a retreat, just the 70 deposit, which is non-returnable and non-transferable. We can immediately confirm bookings when made online.
At the beginning of all retreats we offer an in depth practical introduction to the meditation practices, including group discussion. There is also time to get to know the team and other retreatants. Most of the remainder of the retreat is a period of silent practice. Participants are also encouraged to take advantage of the one-to-one practice reviews with experienced team members.
On all retreats, irrespective of the theme, our main focus is to help retreat participants engage with the specific needs of their own meditation and Dharma practice.
Themes we may focus on include all the principal kinds of Buddhist meditation: mindfulness practice and the mindfulness of breathing, the development of loving-kindness (metta bhavana) and the other 'sublime abodes' (compassion, joy and equanimity), Dharma reflection and insight (vipashyana) practices, just sitting and formless practice - opening to awareness.
