With the exception of a few scattered Anglo-Saxon charters, all English local history begins with Domesday. When William the Conqueror commissioned Domesday Book in 1085, it was the most complete guide to a country ever undertaken. Nearly one thousand years later, it still is. Such is its authority that it was last consulted for legal precedent in the 1980's.
For anyone interested in where they live now or where they come from, Domesday reveals fascinating facts about customs, value and ownership of their village, town and county more than 900 years ago. It is the beginning of all local history. Only 1,000 numbered copies of each Domesday county were created from the unique manuscript in the National Archive at Kew.
This Digital Domesday is the only version of the Domesday manuscripts to provide access to high-resolution images of all folios from Great and Little Domesday. The images were taken from the 10 x 8 inch transparencies shot in 1985 at the time the 413 folios of Great and 475 of Little Domesday were unbound for restoration.
Exceptionally sumptuous and imposing, the Breslau Psalter is one of the most impressive manuscripts to have survived from the Middle Ages. This treasure is kept at the world-renowned Fitzwilliam Museum in Cambridge, who say that this 'Psalter displays the piety, wealth and cosmopolitan tastes of its ducal patrons'.
