Cromarty Courthouse Museum
Step through the door of this elegant eighteenth century Courthouse and come face to face with the tough Highland justice of the time; visit a prisoner, take part in a trial. This grade A listed building is the home to the museum of Cromarty and its neighbouring parish, Resolis. Our museum shop has a range of locally produced goods and items specially made for the Courthouse from elsewhere in.

Find out about our historic town and the neighbouring parish of Resolis through our exhibitions. The temporary exhibition this summer. The Courthouses's audio enactment of historic Cromarty trials was a great experience. This was my second visit to Cromarty Courthouse, the first being five years ago.

Cromarty Courthouse Museum combines the fascinating story of an eighteenth century courthouse and jail, complete with cells, prisoners and active court cases, with the story of a vibrant north Highland seaport and its hinterland. Gives a brief account of the creation and development of this iconic eighteenth century courthouse.
It was the promise of funds from the from the Commissioners for Forfeited Estates (estates forfeited from landowners who supported the Jacobites in 1715 and 1745) that enabled George Ross to embark of the building of the Cromarty Courthouse in 1771. Ross, a very successful Anglo-Scottish businessman, had bought the Cromarty estate in 1767 and set about investing heavily in the town.
This elegant Grade A listed former courthouse, now houses fascinating exhibitions about the historic town of Cromarty and the neigbouring parish of Resolis. The Courthouse is more than just one of the oft-photographed eighteenth century buildings and tourist attractions in Cromarty, it is the repository for the cultural heritage of the town.
In 2021, to celebrate 30 years of the Courthouse as a museum, we installed new audio 'soundscapes' to enhance understanding of some of the events which took place here. These cover both the eighteenth and nineteenth centuries and, in the case of the life story of Sir Thomas Urquhart, even earlier. There are five "Hearing History" soundscape sites marked on the museum map.
Sir Thomas Urquhart is in exile away from his beloved Cromarty and dreaming. You can meet him sitting at a desk near the entrance to the museum and hear his dreaming monologues, or you can read a summary of them here. In this series of monologues, we meet Sir Thomas Urquhart, eccentric genius, laird of Cromarty and owner of the large mediaeval stone castle which preceded Cromarty House.
