Barry & Anthony Akins were already experienced bakers when Akins Family Bakers opened in 1984. The brothers had worked in various bakeries, including the well known bakery Hossner's on Frederick Street in South Shields owned by their Uncle Ernest. Ernest Hossner inspired their enthusiasm and passion, and taught them the importance of using traditional artisan craft baking methods to create produce of superior quality.
When Thomas Akins retired as an electrician, he along with his wife Sylvia saw the enthusiasm their sons Barry and Anthony had for baking. They both provided valuable support towards the opening of Akins Family Bakers. The bakery quickly made a name for itself by selling a high quality range of freshly baked products direct from the shop at the front of the bakery.

Beautiful breads, spreads and pasties, lovely staff and plenty of choices (vegan friendly). Cannot recommend Akins breads enough. Every time we visit Shields, we do our best to get some freshly prepared breads to take back with us. Such a novelty to have a lovely bakery still in your town. Would wholly recommend!

First visit the other day , how naughty were we. Went wild and tried their sourdough cheese & onion, little disappointed as the cheese & onion was only on the top and not mixed into the bread the flavour was there but could have been better.
Couldn't make my mind up as to which savouries to get so got one of each Large mince pie, pork pie, Cornish pie and a cheese & onion all of which were really good and tasty.
Would definitely make another visit Covid-19 allowing.

Sorry second time now where sandwiches have little content ..my partner went for a cheese pastie and a ham cheese savoury. the bun again a little hard to pull apart. ham was okay but filling . all I can say is well done for hitting the minimal target. . very disappointed not the first time. reputation is hard to get back. is this the… beginnings of profit over customer. I ended up with Cornish pastie as the cheese pastie apparently were burnt on top. again just flog it customers are little people. . at some point I'll pop in if I leave dissapointed. . two customers are gone.. rant over.
