Today, more than ever before, there is great importance in writing a Will. By making a Will you decide exactly how your estate is distributed and plan for the needs of your individual circumstances. There is no law to say that you must have a Will, however if the worst were to happen and you do not have a Will, then your assets may be distributed according to the law rather than your individual wishes.
Planning your estate can involve many different aspects from basic Wills to Will Trusts and Lifetime Trusts. Modern families can have complicated dynamics and there is often a potential for conflict in the future if relationships break down or after the death of a client. Estate planning can also help to minimise tax liabilities or other expenses after your death.
Trusts have been used by families for centuries to protect wealth. A trust is a formal transfer of assets (whether they be property, shares or just cash) to a small group of people known as 'Trustees' with instructions that they hold the assets for the benefit of others. If the trust is to be made in your lifetime to take immediate effect, then it is usually evidenced by a trust deed and often referred to as a 'settlement'.
If you lose capacity either through an accident or illness such as a stroke or dementia, someone needs to act on your behalf to carry out your personal and financial affairs. Losing legal capacity to make decisions for yourself will mean that your bank accounts are frozen until someone can be appointed to make decisions for you.
A Severance of Joint Tenancy is the alteration of ownership between joint owners of a property. If you own your property jointly, either as a married couple, partners or friends, you will have chosen one of two kinds of ownership. As joint tenants, each person owns 100% of the property at the same time as the other.

My will requirements were pretty complicated (in my opinion anyway!) but Chris was patient and understanding all of the way through the process, despite me taking forever to make decisions and supply the info in dribs and drabs!

Chris helped us to produce our first ever Wills and was thoroughly professional from start to finish. He explained at length all of the decisions that we were required to make and gave us as much time as we needed to do so - we never felt rushed nor patronised despite some of our very basic queries! Above all Chris was extremely patient with us when our hectic calendars meant the postponement of meetings etc and we would absolutely use Chris again and have no hesitation in recommending him to anyone seeking a similar service.
