Goals Beyond Grass
Based in Gloucestershire, we are a UK charity helping disabled children and adults by reducing social isolation and engaging the whole community in accessible sport and social activities. GBG venture out into the local community and beyond, offering sessions within schools, care homes, day centres, colleges and universities. Participation in sport and physical activity increases self-esteem, develops social skills and team cohesiveness whilst also enhancing mental wellbeing.
Services
Our philosophy is that all people, regardless of ability, should engage in social and physical activity. Goals Beyond Grass was founded in 2016 following a successful start in Powerchair Football by the CEO Brian Dix. He recognised that the work being done to engage the community and give disabled people more opportunities to engage in fun, social sports was not enough.
Like so many charities we rely on the support of kindness of individuals, business, other charities and trusts and we can't state just how much we appreciate them as we try and make the most of this truly wonderful sport. Julie Kent has recently joined the GBG family as a charity Trustee. She is extremely supportive of what we do and has a mass of experience in the third sector.
The sport is played on a standard-sized basketball court, with each team having 4 players on the pitch at any one time. A match consists of two twenty-minute periods with rolling substitutions happening throughout. In order to create more space and a free-flowing game, two main rules have been created.
We are passionate about delivering and developing Powerchair Football. We aim to raise the standard and awareness of the sport and produce more players, coaches and fundraisers for local clubs. If there is a need for a Powerchair club in the area, we will happily set up the club. There must be enough players in the area to take place; we recommend at least six players per club to start with.
Amelia takes part in our frame football sessions. She has Cerebral Palsy, so frame football is a great way for her to develop stronger muscles. As you can see, Amelia loves it; here, you can see her celebrating her fourth goal! Are you looking for a way to support GBG? For only 2.50 you can take part in our hugely popular GBG Lotto.
