John Hansard Gallery
John Hansard Gallery, part of the University of Southampton, is one of the UK's leading contemporary art galleries. We support, develop and present great art by outstanding artists from across the world and are proud to play a dynamic role in the cultural life of Southampton and the region. Our vision is to create extraordinary encounters with great art that inspire people and communities to change the world for the better.

Our mission is to be a locally engaged and an internationally recognised contemporary art gallery in the heart of Southampton. To realise this, we create innovative and critically acclaimed contemporary art exhibitions, events, learning and research projects that excite, challenge, reflect and reach the widest possible public audience.
Services
We rely on the generous support of individuals, trusts and foundations and corporates to keep John Hansard Gallery free for visitors. Your support ensures that we can continue our engagement and outreach work, making the very best in contemporary art accessible to all. In 1979, John Henry Hansard made a generous donation to the University of Southampton to help realise its ambition of showing contemporary art at the University's Highfield Campus.
Engagement and learning are at the heart of everything we do. Our regular programme of talks, tours and creative workshops bring you closer to art in John Hansard Gallery. Learn through seeing, thinking, discussing and making. Supported by friendly Gallery Staff, visiting artists and speakers, our activities happen in the galleries, in our bespoke Active Space, and in the community.
We are located in the city centre opposite Guildhall Square, in the heart of Southampton's Cultural Quarter. John Hansard Gallery seeks to be fully accessible. We would be happy to provide any further information or to discuss your requirements. Please contact us if you have any queries or comments on 023 8059 2158 or email: [email protected].

It's not the biggest gallery I've frequented but I do love how they try to regularly get Black and brown artists as their main showcase. Thank you for doing so!

My favourite local gallery, unique and unusual arts on display, which regularly change. Do phone ahead before visit, as often parts are closed for changing of exhibitions, they also close on unexpected days! But you really can't ask for more of a free attraction! Staff are lovely an wonderful with kids, There is a play art area for the kids too. Look forward to my next visit.

I love the fact that this is a free gallery. They switch up their exhibitions quite often so there's always new stuff to see, and most of it is made by young local artists. The whole place has a nice modern feel to it, especially on a nice sunny day. All the exhibits and art have at least something of interest to everyone, since it's very expressive and personal.
Definitely recommend this nice place :)

Had never been to this gallery before and it was a real eye opener! Some unexpected parts. The video installation on the top floor was a little bizarre with no real guidance about what it was, but the works on the ground floor - particularly the Soviet era maps of the UK were exciting!
