Holistic therapies are all about treating the whole person - mind, body, spirit and emotional well-being - to gain balance and achieve optimal health. Holistic therapists understand that if one part of the body is not working properly, then other parts of the body will be affected by this disharmony, since all parts of the person are intricately connected.

So holistic therapies work to balance and relax the whole person, and in doing so, aim to stimulate the body's natural healing powers. My interest in reflexology started whilst working as a midwife, after hearing positive comments from clients who had reflexology treatments to help with typical discomforts of pregnancy, such as back pain, indigestion or insomnia.

Reflexology is thought to have originated from ancient Egypt and China, with evidence being found of its practice in Chinese texts from between 300 and 100 BC, and in the tomb of the Egyptian physician Ankhmahor near Cairo, dating to around 2300BC, where the practice is shown in images on the walls.
As a qualified midwife with many years of experience, I am very aware of what a difficult time pregnancy can be for many women. During pregnancy, women's bodies undergo huge changes which inevitably lead to aches and pains, disturbed sleep and often tension and stress. Reflexology treatments may help your body to adjust and cope with these changes, and so relieve many of the symtoms associated with pregnancy.
Although a certain amount of stress is a normal part of life, there are times when our stress levels can rise enough to give us uncomfortable or debillitating symptoms. Anxiety may occur as a reaction to rising stress levels. The number of people suffering with work related stress is rising for a multitude of reasons.
Aromatherapy is another ancient form of treatment, using essential oils extracted from aromatic plants. These are taken into the body via absorption through the skin, and also through inhalation, which stimulates the olfactory system. Properties within the oils are thought to restore a state of balance to the body, aid self-healing and enhance the immune system.
A. Yes, I use lighter pressure, and if necessary give shorter treatments, but these are still extremely beneficial. A. This depends on your reason for using these therapies. If you are using them for relaxation only, then treatments can be as often as you wish. If you are having treatments for a current health problem, then I recommend an initial course of 4 - 8 treatments.
