Phobias, Panic Attacks, Stress, Depression, OCD and Generalised Anxiety are the most common reasons for people seeking help. Common phobias include agoraphobia (fear of public spaces or going out eg shopping), claustrophobia (fear of enclosed spaces which can include lifts and crowded areas), heights, spiders and even hospitals.
I experienced my first panic attack at University and it was just so awful. It is hard to describe unless you have experienced it. But, I knew I didn't ever want to have another one so I started to avoid situations that might give me a panic attack. But the attacks kept coming and I ended up dropping out of University.
Dr Sandi has written over 20 psychology books, all published by reputable publishers (none self-published) and available from Amazon. Most books have been published in a range of different languages and countries too. To see the full list, type Sandi Mann into an Amazon search. This is the first book i have read that talks to you and not down to you.
Panic attacks can happen to anyone and usually come out of the blue. The problem is that once you have one attack, the experience is so dreadful, that you develop a deep fear of having another attack - and this can lead to severe restrictions in your life. For example, if you had a panic attack whilst in a supermarket, you may start to avoid that supermarket - and eventually, all supermarkets and even all shops.
A phobia is an extreme or irrational fear. Many people are scared of things, or strongly dislike them, but that does not mean they are phobic. For example, a person may hate going in lifts or may be scared of snakes, but these feelings would not necessarily be classed as 'phobias'. To be classed as a phobia, the fear must be either extreme or irrational.
