Lower back pain is one of the most common problems to affect people of all ages with 8 out of 10 people estimated to suffer from lower back pain at some stage in their lives. Although often acutely painful, lower back pain is not usually as serious as it may seem to the patient and is often due to sprains and strains of the soft tissues such as ligaments, tendons, muscles, joints or discs.
Shoulder problems are very common and may be due to a number of different causes such as rotator cuff and other muscle tears, impingement and other tendon issues, frozen shoulder, acromio-clavicular joint problems, dislocations and joint laxity, referred pain from the neck & upper back and osteoarthritis.
Taking part in sport or keeping fit can be rewarding, improve your health and reduce the risk of serious illnesses such as heart disease, stroke or cancer. It can also help with maintaining a healthy lifestyle and weight. Adults are now encouraged to do at least 150 minutes of moderate intensity aerobic exercise each week and to perform exercises to strengthen all the main muscle groups in the arms, legs and core.
Osteopathy is a safe form of treatment during pregnancy when postural and ligament changes may lead to lower back pain, sciatica and problems with the pubic symphysis. Osteopathic maniuplation is usually avoided at key stages in the first trimester but is safe thereafter and massage & mobilisation techniques are safe to be used throughout pregnancy.
