Next Steps was set up in 2001 in North Yorkshire to help local people with mental health problems. Our community cafe in Church Street, Norton has a warm friendly atmosphere where everyone is welcome. The cafe is run based on a social enterprise model and is run by our catering supervisor Joanne and is heavily supported by over 60 volunteers. We have two paid low level permitted work scheme workers which offers work experience to people on long-term benefits and a pathway back into work.
Out of hours was devised by our members, they told us they felt increased loneliness, increased suicidal thoughts and isolated on evenings and weekends. We listened and devised a social group that they decide there plans and outings, run by a member of staff and a volunteer this happens every Tuesday evening.
