I spent nearly 15 years working in the field of environmental biology as a researcher, project leader and teaching fellow, before deciding on a career change and becoming a nurse. I have had a long standing interest in complementary health care. I first learned about acupuncture when I had treatment for a painful condition I had been diagnosed with and was amazed with the results it achieved.
The benefits of acupuncture have been appreciated since its development in China thousands of years ago. Many people turn to acupuncture as it is seen as a holistic and natural therapy which can be used alongside conventional treatments provided, for example, by your GP. Acupuncture can be beneficial in the treatment of a wide range of conditions.
The great thing about acupuncture is that it is a therapy unique to each individual. A patient could present with one or several issues and needles are placed according to what the issue or combination of issues are. A treatment designed specifically to meet your needs will be devised from your initial consultation.
Traditional acupuncture plays an integral role in Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM). In traditional acupuncture, it is thought that De Qi (pronounced chi), or life energy, flows around the body in channels called meridians, helping to regulate bodily functions and nourish organs. By needling points along these meridians it is possible to influence flow of energy and exert a therapeutic effect on the meridians and organs.
