Services
We have increased the gallery's display space by 60% by creating a new first-floor gallery in the space above the Main Gallery on the ground floor. We have created an entirely new gallery above the existing South Gallery and expanded. York Castle Museum was founded by Dr John Kirk, a doctor from Pickering, North Yorkshire, and houses his extraordinary collection of social history, reflecting everyday life in the county.
We aim to enable as many visitors as possible to experience all of our sites. Members of our Welcome Teams have received special training including on autism, deaf and hard of hearing, blind and partially-sighted, dementia, and different types of guide dogs. Some team members can also use British Sign Language.
Head of Fundraising and Advocacy Salary: 45,960 - 51,705 (YMT Grade 7) Contract: Fixed Term for two years in the first instance Hours: Full Time - 37 hours per week York Museums Trust and North Yorkshire Moors Railway have entered into an exciting new partnership to recruit a shared Head of Fundraising and Advocacy.
Anthony's collection of ceramic is on display at the gallery where it has been designed to look like a living room in his home. As a volunteer you will welcome people in to the space and be available to answer questions about Anthony and his collection. You will also look after the objects that are on open display to make sure they are safe and secure from accidental damage.
More than a year has passed since the death of George Floyd. We joined many other organisations in making a statement of intent to: challenge and change the way we think as an organisation; to rigorously examine the stories we tell and to give a voice to those which have been dismissed or hidden. This statement was the first step at the beginning of the significant culture change we hope to make.

Great green space in the centre of the city. Includes in its grounds the Hospitium, the Yorkshire Museum, wildlife and floral displays, river views, the fascinating observatory, ruins and sculptures outside the back of the art gallery. Gets busy on a lovely day. Picnics abound. Squirrels tame (or cheeky!) enough to take food from your hands.

Do not buy their YMT card at the museum desk!
After recently moving house I did not receive a letter explaining a renewal of subscription 12 months after I bought 2 x £20 cards for my wife and I. As I no longer live in York, I effectively paid £80 for one trip to the museum. When I initially queried this, I was told a refund would be arranged, only to be told by the supervisor that this would not be happening.

Fantastic experience, we didn't know quite what to expect but the whole museum was excellent. Me and my girlfriend (mid/early 20's) were thoroughly entertained throughout. Awesome for all ages as we saw groups of school children dressed in period clothes and enjoying the walk through Victorian street. And also elderly folk enjoying the nostalgia of some of the exhibits. The gaol/dungeon was brilliant, morbid, entertaining and educational. Well worth the £8.50 entrance fee!
