The Concourse, West Kirby, Wirral - located immediately adjacent to West Kirby Railway Station. Our Sensei is Jim Brennan (8th Dan) who has 40 years of experience of Shotokan karate. Sensei Brennan is a senior instructor with the KUGB - Karate Union of Great Britain. At West Kirby Karate Club we study the martial art of Shotokan Karate which originated in Japan and is now practised all over the world.
The word Karate means "Empty Hand" in Japanese to show that no weapons are used. Shotokan karate is considered to be one of the more balanced variations of karate, balancing speed and power techniques and using both kicks and hand techniques in equal quantities. To study karate all you need is a reasonable level of physical fitness with the will to learn.

This section contains information about karate and links to some other sites which you may wish to visit for a more in-depth look at karate as a martial art. Dojo Rules and Terminology: All members are advised to read through this section on a regular basis and especially as a reminder before gradings.
This section will give you all the details you need to either start training with us or continue training with us. Training Information: This section contains details of our training times, and contains vital information if you wish to join the club. Grading: An important part of karate is the grading, and this section contains details of what to do during and approaching the time for grading.
We train on 3 days each week. Monday, Wednesday and Sunday. Each lesson lasts around 1 hour. Beginners are asked to attend beginner lessons until they are at a grade where they feel they can learn more in an advanced lesson. Higher Grades can attend both lessons where they will go over some of the more basic techniques in the first lesson, and learn some more advanced techniques in the second lesson.
If you think you would like to grade at the next grading and want to know whether you are eligible please speak to Sensei Jim Brennan. Remember that to be able to grade, you need to have attended a minimum number of lessons since the last club grading was held. All members are requested to attend this special lesson, (which starts promptly at 6pm ) with Sensei Brennan, even if not grading.
