Goyararu Martial Arts Wirral
To most people the Martial Arts are no more than specialised forms of combat. Although Martial Arts training can be used for self-defence, combat is not the only essence of these noble Art forms. The ultimate goal of GOYARARU as an ART FORM is the attainment of Physical, Emotional and Philosophical balance.

How can the finer Human qualities be refined and developed by the constant training, and sometimes only training, of the more brutal, and uncontrolled aspects of the Human personality, It is a matter of great sadness that the philosophy of the Arts is not just absent in most training centres, but actually suppressed and replaced with an obsession towards combat, violence and arrogance, and the entire array of destructive character traits that the Old Masters sought so much to control and guide.

Our founder MR. John Williams began his Martial Arts training in the early 1950's at his home in Toxteth, Liverpool, with his older brother Tommy. Their first teacher was their father Mr. Thomas Henry Williams, who successfully boxed for the Army during the second World war.

John trained in various clubs around the area including, The Golden Gloves, Belvedere Boys club but he fought out of the Brunswick Boys club on Princes Road, having boxing matches in many clubs including the Florence institute. After travelling to various places around the world, he found himself in Nottingham in the early seventies and helped form a club called the British Goya-Ra-Ru Association.
We maintain a high standard and do not make promises or false guarantees that you will become a Black belt. Only by training and an intense desire to improve oneself, you will reap the rewards. If anyone has an overwhelming urge to be a Black belt without the effort required then save some time and money and buy one from the shop; it will cost you only a few pounds and leave you with time to pursue other activities.
The basic essential components of Karate & Boxing are the first stage of a GOYARARU students learning program and utilised to build strength, flexibility, co-ordination and overall improve each individuals fitness level and discipline.

According to the Old Masters, Karate was developed not only to strengthen the body, train the reflexes, sharpen the senses and enable a sense of rhythm and co-ordination but mainly as a means of attaining spiritual and emotional enlightenment.Karate techniques when working together are very efficient and consist of physical techniques that make full use of the maximum storage and release of energy the body has to offer.
Non contact Boxing is introduced to the student at an early stage and generally consists of four types of punches, all other punches basically being variants of these; the jab, hook, uppercut and cross. Students are encouraged to seek out maximum power in every punch from the jab to the cross. We do not teach Boxing as a means to enter a ring and face an opponent and fight an agreed number of rounds.
Goyararu freestyle has a profound interpretation in terms of an underlying philosophy, it enables a person to develop their perception, awareness and collectiveness of mind so that by the attainment of these qualities they can reduce the number of missed opportunities not only in freestyle but in the wider arena of life itself.

Was a student at the club with my mum & her partner back in the late 90s! Loved it back then & sometimes wish I'd kept going but I moved away from the area anyway so it would have been impossible.
My positive experiences there helped me to maintain an interest in martial arts during my 20s when I started Wing chun kung fu. I'm back training again… after a long period off and I thought of goyararu straight away. Didn't expect to find you on FB!
From what I remember back then the club was a fantastic, real, down to earth place with a welcoming, supportive, no nonsense attitude to training

It’s good to be back after lockdown. Currently training both Karate and Tai Chi and loving it. Would highly recommend to all. John is a great teacher as are all of the black belts. The club is a lovely friendly place and the people are amazing.
All Covid safety measures are in place.
