The Vale of Leven Bowling Club is in Alexandria, West Dunbartonshire, Scotland. Arguably the largest and most successful bowling club in West Dunbartonshire, we have more than 200 full members and two of the best lawn bowling greens in the area. We try to provide excellent facilities for our members and guests and this updated website was created to celebrate our 150th Anniversary in 2017.

Founded away back in 1867, we have a long history and we are located just over one mile from the Bonnie Banks of Loch Lomond, in one of the most picturesque parts of Scotland - if not the World. The website is provided as a resource for our members and also guests and bowlers in Scotland, the UK and Worldwide.
Services
The Vale of Leven Bowling Club has two full sized greens of six rinks. In recent years these have been playing as well as any in our district. Our green keeping staff and the green ranger work hard to maintain this standard and we have been rewarded by being asked to host several important County and other representative matches.
You will not find a comprehensive description of the rules and objectives of Lawn Bowls here but hopefully I can provide an insight into our game and how it is played. You can also read a bit about the history of the game at our Lawn Bowls History page. You can also download the full copy of World Bowls' the Laws of the Game of Bowls as a PDF.
Many of our older players will say that twenty or thirty years ago much more attention was paid to bowling green etiquette. In my experience (as a member since 1969) this is true but fortunately lawn bowls remains one of the few sports where common courtesy and etiquette is still prevalent. We should be proud of this and in order to make the game as enjoyable as possible bowling green etiquette should be promoted to members old and new.
Following on a meeting in Glasgow in 1848, attended by about two hundred players from various clubs all with different Laws for playing the game, W.W. Mitchell of Glasgow, drew up a "uniform code of Laws", and these are the basis of all subsequent Laws. In 1892, the Scottish Bowling Association was formed and in 1893, it drew up rules or Laws based on Mitchell's Code and also published a Code of Ethics.
We are located just over a mile from the Bonnie Banks of Loch Lomond, in the centre of the town of Alexandria and adjacent to the Christie Park.
