The Turf provides a wonderful setting where you can relax and enjoy great food and drinks and friendly service from a family run pub. Clive and Ginny Redfern took over Turf in 1990 and, together with their sons James and Oliver, have continued to renovate and improve this fascinating timber framed slate hung listed building.
This is a proper pub. There are no carpets, just pine strip floors making our pub ideal for muddy paws and muddy kids. Outside is a very large beer garden and in summer we run our popular BBQ and Bar. There is also a large 'cook your own' BBQ's with its own deck and marquee available to hire. Ideal for Birthday or Office Parties, Celebrations or just an excuse to get together with friends.

Services
We have a large decked area with a marquee attached (hire fee of 100), situated right alongside the Exe Estuary, equipped with professional Australian gas BBQ's which is very easy to use and does a great job. We will provide you with all the equipment need, bring out locally sourced food and drink then leave your party to it.
Due to our unique location we do not have parking available but below are some ways to reach us. There is another ferry in operation which runs across the river Exe, between the landing in Ferry Road, Topsham, and the western bank of the river by Topsham Lock Cottage. Both car parks are free of charge and are accessed from the A379 Dawlish road, turning left at the mini roundabout at the end of the Exminster bypass.
There are a number of small businesses offering great adventures whilst at the turf, please do check them out. EXE ADVENTURES offers daily paddling group sessions with instructor for groups of all sizes, ages. Whether you would like to paddle an Individual kayak, Double Kayak, Family canoe or Stand Up Paddle board.

Was walking around the marsh and stopped here for a rest and hot chocolate. Great place and nice that you can only get here by walking or bicycle. Lovely garden with a fantastic view over the estuary. We were made welcome and had the use of an outdoor table even though we only had one hot drink each. Little one loved running around on the grass

Arrived at about 11. Told by the gentleman we were not interested in eating just a drink. Not a problem as they were starting meals at 12.
Told us an app on the table that we needed to use on our phone and also they were short staffed. Not a fan of using the phone as an app for just a drink. Just told we can go to the bar and put an order in and they would bring it out to us, which I did and it was quick and easy. My partner then went into the bar for our second lot of drinks the girl behind the bar said you need to go to the app. She told her we didn't know how to use it, Girl behind the bar

We hadn't booked & there was a queue for a table but the chap taking names was patient & friendly & only looking to keep people as safe as possible (something some people didn't get!). It didn't take long for a table, the app was easy to use to order food & drink, which was all excellent.
Overall a nice place to stop for lunch.

This is a seasonal Pub. They close for the winter so DO NOT go looking for a pint there from aprox Fireworks night - Easter.
When you get there you will appreciate why.
So why is this pub so great - Only people who know about it and can be bothered to make the effort go there. So that makes it special.
Staff are friendly and very help full. I think its family run and so the staff are friends and family.
Good real ales and they do a bit of larger. They are know for food so I expect they do a decent bottle of wine or two and the food I have had - chips were good.
They often on hot sunny

Great pub in the summer since there loads of space to sit outside and enjoy a pint in the sumer sun. I often cycle there from Dawlish Warren and have a drink and if I don't eat at double locks I have food here.
Can get very busy from cyclists, walkers and people coming on the ferry from Topsham.
Its great to eat here, get the ferry over to Topsham with my bike then cycle to Exeter where I can then get the train home or cycle back.
Great to sit by the river and watch the boats go by.

Love this pub. Loads of space outside and you can take your own bbq food in the summer or they run their own bbq so you can eat outside with a pint and watch the boats go by
you can also catch the ferry over to topsham which is fun.
there is a kids playgound with a big pirate ship which can get a little over run in the summer if you are not kid friendly.
you cannot drive to the pub but can park a mile away and walk or cycle.
