In addition, each year in England, approximately 40-50 deaths occur from carbon monoxide poisoning and a further 400 people are admitted to hospital suffering from carbon monoxide poising from chimneys that have not been swept. In severe cases it can lead to permanent damage to health or even death.
Even low levels of Carbon Monoxide poisoning can lead to permanent ill-health or death. The gas has no colour, taste or smell and so it is essential that appliances are properly installed and serviced and have sufficient ventilation. Apart from regular chimney and flue sweeping it is strongly recommended that a carbon monoxide detector is installed in homes.
At Samuel James Chimney Sweep, the safety of the sweep and the customers is of upmost importance. We all know that soot is a black powder but few know what constituents make up the compound that sweeps clean daily from the chimneys that we work on. Soot is a by-product of the incomplete combustion of hydrocarbons.
This chimney cleaning service is very tidy with sheets placed over the fireplace ensuring it is completely sealed off so that no dust escapes. However, if soft furnishings or delicate objects are close to the fireplace, it is suggested that these are covered or removed. The chimney will be smoke tested, to test the ventilation and draw, and a Chimney Sweep Certificate provided.
The birds die in the nest and, as the season progresses, the birds decay and you will notice an over powering smell as well as a possible infestation of flies in the room. Don't try to solve the problem yourself by lighting a fire in an attempt to burn the nest out. You run the risk of setting the chimney on fire, filling the whole house with smoke or even subjecting yourself to gas poisoning.

Very pleased with the service provided by Sam of Samuel James Chimney Sweep. We were recommended by a friends, booking was a breeze - Sam was friendly and accommodating of our shifts. He arrived at the agreed time and was both polite and professional. We have just had a new carpet fitted and my wife was concerned about the mess but Sam took excellent care to protect this and was so tidy in fact, you’d never know he’d been.
He was also extremely knowledgeable, this is our first property with an open fire and my wife had lots of questions in regards to which fuel type would suit us best and
