Trimontium Roman fort site near Newstead lies just east of Melrose, the home of the NEW Trimontium Museum. Trimontium is of international importance as the largest Roman fort and settlement north of Hadrian's Wall and the site of one of the largest concentrations of Roman military-related finds in the British Isles.
The mystery of this great cache found in 117 pits and wells remains unexplained. Our NEW museum in Melrose tells its story providing a modern window on the pivotal and turbulent history of this frontier post, which for much of its existence was the main forward base for the continued Roman invasion and occupation of Scotland.

The fort and the settlement comprised a military/civilian complex which involves a fort, 4 annexes, field systems, a bridge crossing the river Tweed plus roads, shrines and a cemetery covering around 370 acres. It also the site of the most northerly Roman Amphitheatre within the Roman empire. Trimontium encapsulated all levels of Roman society with bath houses, vicus, mansio, horse-training structures and workshops.

We need your support to help us achieve our ambition and bring the story of the Romans in Scotland to current and future generations. This is an important story that helps us all to understand who we are today and that how our journey has helped shape the culture and identity of the British Isles, Europe and beyond.
The Trimontium Museum Trust run a NEW purpose built museum in Melrose devoted to telling the story of The Romans in the Scottish Borders and displaying finds from, and associated with, Trimontium Roman Fort at nearby Newstead. The museum is based in Melrose, 2 miles east of Galashiels and 40 miles south of Edinburgh in the stunning Scottish Borders.
We run a series of walks from April to October from our Museum in Melrose to the fort site of Trimontium, near Newstead. We also run a guided Melrose town walk that explores this fascinating historic town nestling in the Borders landscape. The Trimontium fort site walks are guided by our experienced volunteers who will relate the history of Trimontium as well as other points of interest along the route.
The trust has a history of providing engaging and curriculum relevant education & learning opportunities. As we return to museum and school activities we are keen to adapt and tailor our learning opportunities to match with the demands of schools and students. Activities can centred around a visit the fort site at Newstead and the museum site in Melrose.

If you are at all interested in the Roman occupation of Scotland this is an essential place to visit. A well informed volunteer introduced our small group to the exhibition and the video presentation. This is written and narrated by Alistair Moffat. It is a super introduction to the subject of the museum and worth watching, especially if, like me, you are not an expert.
The rest of the exhibition is a startling display of just how much evidence survives and a tantalising glimpse of how much must remain to be discovered just a few feet beneath the soil nearby at Trimontium.

A small museum but with a brilliant array of artefacts. Interactive video screens that offer great information.
Lovely helpful staff that make you feel welcome, and as long as you don’t have a dog that kicks off; they are more than welcome too. If you like your historical information on the immediate and surrounding area, go and see. And only a short walk from the camping site.

Beautifully refurbished and expanded museum, fascinating exhibits with interactive displays and videos explaining the history of this important site. The enthusiastic staff and volunteers were on hand to answer questions. We had a very enjoyable visit to the museum and completed the guided walk which was also very worthwhile. Congratulations to all involved in making the new museum possible!

Very friendly and knowledgeable staff were on hand to offer help and information. The Museum is stocked full of exhibits including a hoard of silver denari, a reproduction of the famous cavalry mask,… reproduction armour and weapons, artefacts from the Trimontium fort excavations as well as several scale models of the fort itself. It's a tight fit. Plans are afoot to expand the exhibition space or relocate to larger premises. Oh, I nearly forgot. * whispers * they need to increase their entry price ........ it's only £2 😀
