The Discovery Museum: What can I say that hasn't already been said before?
I've been going all my life and now "The Little 'un" goes too. For the money it gets, compared to other, larger, more "well known" institutions it does a very good job indeed of showing both Newcastle's bricks and mortar history, its industrial innovations and the people - because Newcastle is nothing with them remember that.
I especially like the Story of the Tyne exhibits with the tremendous diorama of the River and the superb ship models of everything that sailed the High Seas from dredgers to battleships like HMS Nelson

Lots of information about the history of Newcastle presented in an easy to understand way with lots of artefacts to look at. For me, the highlight was Turbinia, a fascinating, revolutionary, boat made in the late 19th century. It looks like a large model at first so to find it is a real boat and see and read it's history made my day!

The museum was brilliant. So much information about the history of the city and the achievements of the North east. The only issue that I had was the audio was far to loud. As I was listening to one another would start and they would drown each other out so couldn't make out either. Which also made it hard to concentrate on what I was reading. And while sitting trying to watch the history of Tyne Tees TV all I could hear was 1940s music coming from the next room. This was a shame as the rest of my experience was amazing.

I love how walkable the city of Newcastle is... easy walk from my hotel. Love the free museums that allow me to take in the history and culture of this lovely city.
A place to enjoy even without tiny tots in tow. I am solo travelling through Europe and took to visiting the city.
Friendly staff and really interesting exhibits.

Thoroughly good day out for the kids and adults alike.
If it's just an adult visit, you can really take time to appreciate the intricacies of the displays. Some very poignant pieces that provoke an emotion I won't give away here.
Plenty for the children as there is an interactive level too.
Would definitely visit again. Plenty of parking outside.(2 car parks, the discovery museum car park is a little cheaper too)

It's a beautiful museum although it seems a bit 'messy'... A bit of history, a bit of science, a bit of technology, a bit of almost everything. BUT it is the best way to have an overview of what made Newcastle ( I loved the short biographies of some important people).
Don't forget to buy the museum guide book which costs only £ 1,50. An I have to congratulate the staff; so friendly and so helpful. Good job everyone.

Had a good time. Splash zone not open. Use to go all the time with my older children. Haven't been for a while a d took my youngest 10 years old. Few things not on that my other children loved which was a shame. Maybe due to covid? Red arrow flight was OK. Not a good as some stimulators but the 18 Yr old and the 10 Yr old seemed to enjoy it.

For me the best part of this museum is the Story of Newcastle on the Ground Floor which takes you through the history of the city from Roman times to 20th Century. I thought the film on "Tyne Tees Broadcasting" 50 years from 1959 to 2009 was brilliant as it covered this whole period with original film and broadcasts of the time often with backing music of that time.
The 2nd floor has a number of Science/Technology exhibits, whilst the 1st Floor looks at the history of the Tyne river through activities of ship building etc. I found the film of people's accounts of their working lives over a period

Went on a very quiet day. Directions are clearly marked out. Probably don't need to book. A couple of the interactive parts aren't available due to covid. Can take you hours if you dead everything or you could just wonder through in 30 mins. Fun for children
