In 1952 the Old Hastings Preservation Society (OHPS) was formed to encourage the preservation of a number of endangered historic buildings, including the 1746 stable block situated at 1a High Street, which Hastings Council proposed to demolish. With the backing of the Georgian Society this building was listed as one of historic and architectural value.
As a result, the OHPS began looking for ways it could be used, and also for a means of securing funds for its restoration. The Stables Trust Limited was founded to preserve the fabric of the building and convert it, with the support of the Hastings and District Theatre Guild, into a fully functioning theatre.

Services
The auditorium seats 126, but smaller spaces are available in the art gallery, Gwen Watford gallery and bar. Catering can be arranged, if required, or you can arrange your own. Hiring the theatre is particularly popular with small to medium conference groups, private parties and receptions. Please contact us to discuss your needs.
Seats are available in rows A and B for patrons with mobility, visual or hearing impairments and their assistants. There are spaces for wheelchair users in row A, which can be accessed without any stairs. Wheelchair users are requested to book these seats via the Box Office on (01424) 423221 so we can best cater for any additional requirements.
There is an upstairs bar selling beers, wines, spirits, soft drinks, ice creams and bar snacks. Coffee and confectionery is available from the ground-floor kiosk before each performance and during the interval. We do not serve meals but there are pubs and restaurants on the High Street, George Street and All Saints Street.
The success of the Stables Theatre is entirely due to the dedication and team work of its members and volunteers. The amount of energy, enthusiasm, technical and artistic capability that is and has been donated to the running of the Theatre over the years has been remarkable. This has made The Stables theatre the unique venue it is today.
Elections to the Council take place at our Annual General Meetings in March, so if you'd like to be nominated, look out for the information published here in early spring. All paid-up members are welcome to attend our AGMs, - but there are conditions on your voting rights for new members. To comply with data protection regulations minutes will no longer be made public.

Went to see blue stockings last night. Was greated by two friendly ladies in the reception area.
Me and my girlfriend got ourselves a nice tea and coffee and went for a walk round the building. There is artwork on the ground floor. A nice cosey bar upstairs and a gallery next to the bar. The auditorium is nice but the steps can be a bit steep. There are two entrances though. One on the ground floor and one upstairs.
Parking was fine and right by the door.
I would definately go again.

This was my first visit to The Stables Theatre. My student was playing the Young Queen in a production of The Audience. An excellent play, fabulous cast and incredibly well presented. I was lucky enough to have a seat on the front row which gave me an excellent view of the stage. It is a small theatre, but very well run and friendly. I would highly recommend it!

Wow! Just back after seeing Shadowlands. Quite brilliant. Extremely moving, funny, intellectually stimulating even. Best of all, the quality of the performances - especially the central one of Jack - was beyond anything I’ve seen in regional theatre. The actor’s range from serious academic, through comic moments to the extraordinarily heartfelt last scene blew me away. Well deserved applause and cheering at the close. Thanks to all involved.

Lovely little venue.
Lots of car parking space (register in the foyer).
Very friendly staff, cute little bar with a great view.
Comfortable seats with lots of leg room (Iām 6ā2ā)
They have lots of shows, check out their schedule. Very reasonable prices.
The last show we saw was Pride and Prejudice. Highly recommended.
