Personal Independence Payment (PIP) is a benefit that helps with the extra costs of living with a long-term health condition or disability for people aged 16 to State Pension age. PIP is a non-means tested benefit and is not affected by earnings, other income or savings.
If you are aged between 16 and the State Pension age, you may be entitled to PIP if you have a daily living and/or mobility needs and require extra help because of an illness, disability or mental health condition. If you have reached State Pension age you will need to apply for Attendance Allowance rather than PIP, but this cannot be used to lease a vehicle through the Motability Scheme.

If you are thinking of ordering a Wheelchair Accessible Vehicle (WAV), it is important to understand the different types of WAV available and the size options you can choose from. Passenger WAVs are the most common type of WAV available on the Scheme. These vehicles are specially adapted to allow a wheelchair user to travel as a passenger.
Or, if you have something particular in mind, first use the different options to narrow down your choices. Please note that ongoing challenges in the motoring industry are leading to a shortage of new cars which is expected to continue into 2022. It is worth checking with the dealership if the car you are interested in is in stock or whether it will need to be ordered from the manufacturer, which may well mean a delay.
There are five main categories of products available to lease through the Motability Scheme. Powered wheelchairs and scooters come in 2 different Classes - Class 2 and Class 3 (Class 1 refers to manual wheelchairs). The Class of a product determines where it can be used. More about types of scooters or types of powered wheelchairs.
There are over 4500 Motability Scheme dealers across the UK, each with at least one Scheme specialist to assist you and advise on selecting the car for your needs.
