We're hugely passionate about food, and we believe that shows in our lovingly collected range of local produce. We've got artisan cheeses and gins, an extensive charcuterie section, lovely rustic breads and so much more. A trip to Johns is an adventure of the senses! Whether for everyday or for entertaining, we've a vast and ever-changing range of delights.
Using our artisan delis as our larder, the Johns cafs offer unrivalled freshness & quality. They are truly special, relaxed & safe places to be for breakfast, lunch & afternoon tea. Family & dog friendly plus NEW outdoor eating areas on Instow Pier & Appledore Quay! Our most popular cafe items are now available to take-away too!
Our oldest established location, Instow deli & caf encapsulates everything we're about. From the carefully curated local produce to the warm, welcoming atmosphere - we'd love you to come and experience all that we have to offer. Here are some insights into what makes North Devon so special, featuring pics from our lovely customers and tips for enjoying the area.
The idyllic fishing village of Appledore provides a perfectly quaint location for our stores, which is a thriving part of the community. Offering a caf, deli & grocers to local customers and visitors, you can be assured that a charming, picturesque harbour-side experience awaits. From crabbing on the quay through to the nearby beauty spots like Northam Burrows, there is lots to do in Appledore.
A North Devon institution since the mid forties, The Beach Hut has been a favourite with beach goers for fantastic ice-creams on a hot day and great local coffee. We think our Beach Hut is the perfect accompaniment to one of North Devon's most picturesque beaches. With the quaint fishing village of Appledore across the water and yachts often sailing past, you couldn't pick a more beautiful spot for a picnic, ice-cream or a walk.

Beautiful food, great choice and friendly service. We’ve been to John’s in both Instow and Appledore and personally I prefer this one. Yes both are a little on the pricey side but I see it as part of the holiday treat. One day we bought quiches, potato salad and coleslaw with GF chocolate brownies and had a feast in our holiday cottage – it was a heck of a lot cheaper than eating out. The thing that triggered me to leave a review today was seeing two young staff members making an elderly gentleman (clearly a regular customer) feel so warmly welcomed. So nice to see.

A must if you’re visiting Instow. Charming cafe and deli overlooking the estuary and Instow beach. Comes as no surprise that they’ve won national Farmshop and deli awards. It’s a second generation family business - the owners Sue and Anthony are really passionate, hard working and highly knowledgeable. They source amazing produce and have developed a really diverse range. They were also one of the first delis to support and stock my local business’s (Boom Kitchen) curry kits. Coffee, cakes, crab sandwiches and this enormous gooey cheese that I can’t remember the name of are among my favourites

Nicely presented cafe and deli with space inside to sit and eat.
We bought coffees to go but they were disappointing. If you pay a premium for a particular kind of coffee (like £3 for a flat white) you expect the person making them to know how to. They were indistinguishable from a milky latte.
Staff were a bit off too when asked if we could use the facilities. Sure this is a COVID issue but if other places allow those taking away to use them, sure they could too. Not a place we would visit again.

John’s on the Pier is a welcome addition to Instow. Friendly, helpful staff on hand to welcome you & the breakfast sandwich was heaven! A little sun trap with great views. The perfect spot to watch the world go by. Whether you eat in or takeaway, the food from the deli is amazing. Fab selection of local gins. There is no hesitation in recommending John’s to all our guests @HartlandForestLodge
