Adult workers of the common wasp measure about 12 mm to 17 mm from head to abdomen, whereas the queen is about 20 mm long. It has alternating colours of black and yellow. Wasps often build their nests in your loft, wall cavities, roof spaces, garden sheds or under the eaves of buildings.
The first sign of an ant infestation is usually the sighting of numerous workers throughout the home. Small piles of sand can indicate the entrance to a nest. The garden ant is a nuisance pest; workers can invade property in search of food stuffs. Mating swarms can also be a short-term issue during the mating season, typically in August.
There are about 4,000 species of cockroach, of which 30 species are associated with human habitations and about four species are well known as pests. Among the best-known pest species are the American cockroach (Periplaneta americana) which is about 30 millimetres long, the German cockroach (Blattella germanica) which is about 15 millimetres long and the Oriental cockroach (Blatta orientalis) about 25 millimetres long.
Adult bedbugs are reddish-brown, flattened, oval, and wingless. Bedbugs have microscopic hairs that give them a banded appearance. A common misconception is that they are not visible to the naked eye. Adults grow to 4-5 mm in length and 1.5-3 mm wide. Newly hatched bedbugs (known as nymphs) are translucent, lighter in colour and become browner as they moult and reach maturity.
