The Lion Inn
We've had a great summer but our Chefs need a well earned break so we'll be limiting our availabilty while we get out our online booking system up and running. Keep an eye on our social media pages and website for further info. We will also be closing on Sunday evenings to give our hard working staff a well earned evening off!

Monday - Friday; Lunch 12pm - 2.30pm & Dinner 5pm - 9pm with a snack menu served in between. We have 23 beautifully finished guest rooms waiting to welcome you, all with fully equipped en-suite, flat screen TVs, internet access and space to work. All rooms are air conditioned and include complimentary tea and coffee.
Services
We know you'd expect to find steak, fish & chips and a pastry topped meat pie but we also hope to tempt you with a number of 'specials' which change daily according to supply and season. Whichever you choose, it is freshly prepared and cooked to order - our kitchen brigade awaits the pleasure of cooking for you.
Planning to celebrate a special birthday or event? Our beautiful venue is the perfect place for 60 to 150 people. It is completely self-contained with its own entrance, kitchen and bar not to mention a fantastic private garden which is lit at night. Our function food is based on the great pub food we have been serving at The Lion Inn so we know you won't be disappointed.
We would like to say a massive thank you to you and your team for everything you did to ensure our wedding day went so smoothly. We had the most fantastic day and that was down to the hard work of everyone at The Lion. The entire wedding planning process was made so easy by you, and you were brilliant on the day itself, making sure that everything ran like clockwork.
Located in the historic foodie hub of Maldon, long famous for its sea salt and oysters. Our uniquely cured salmon and eel add to that heritage. Everything is done by hand, our ethos is the very opposite of the supermarket supplier. In our view, mass production is incompatible with the attention required to make the finest smoked salmon and smoked eel on the market.
The Lion, in one guise or another, has been providing food and shelter to weary travellers for hundreds of years and we are proud to be continuing this amazing tradition. The old inn was fully refurbished and extended in 2008, including the addition of 15 guest rooms, in a comfy, eclectic style retaining the original building with its low ceiling, beams and now decorative fireplace, fondly referred to as 'the old pub'.

Under whelmed to say the least….. Could be me but The Lion seems to be going down hill, the food quality and portions don’t command the prices they charge……wasn’t offered festive menu and charged individual prices……..such a shame as it used to be great……I had better food at school
Such a shame as staff are always tip top but the food is not ☹️

Had a lovely meal, bit disappointed that the steak didn't come with the mushroom and tomato 🍅 that we were told.
Side of mushroom and peas were £3.95 each, which I think is very steep.
But the meal was lovely

High end food at good prices. Good service and has a children's menu. Very highly recommended. Three course meal for two adults and two older children with wine and beer -£100. It would be £70 without the booze. Great value for the quality of the food.

Oh my goodness. If you want good ribs this is the place. It's a full rack, it's been in the oven slow roasting for hours and it's a marathon to get through but it's delicious.
Service was excellent. Very quick. Don't know how they do it? Well I do because I asked and the lovely waitress took the time to tell us about the place. She was obviously quite passionate about it which was really good to hear. The place seats about 500! They have about 20 chefs! And they cook a lot of ribs as people come from far and wide to eat them.
There's other nice stuff on the menu of course but... well, why would

First trip back in a while and was not disappointed. As usual delicious food, lots of choice. Very busy, as its so popular and you are unable to book. Only waited around half an hour for a table for 4. Good size portions, attentive staff, what's not too like!

On Thursday 9th September 2021, our granddaughter got married at The Lion, we would both like to say, it was the perfect day, the food, was first class, even though the restaurant was open and people were eating. We had our own private facility. We had a choice of meals, all was delivered together and hot for 30 in the wedding party. The staff were exceptional, even though they were busy, nothing was too much trouble for them, at lunch and in the evening, if you asked for something they came back straight away with the item or the answer. 1st class teamwork, and 1st class venue. We would highly

An annual get together with a couple of friends so we decided to give The Lion Inn another go. It was brilliant the last time. This time was exactly the same.
A wonderfully large pub/restaurant with seating outside, subject to the British climate. We decided not to take the chance and sat inside to take in the ambience and wall furniture that adorned this pub. Old metal adverts, bric a brac and other interesting paraphernalia.
We ordered the sharing fish ploughmans. A wonderful feast with plenty to share. Our friends opted for Haddock and chips and corn-fed chicken breast. Both went down a treat

The Lion Inn is without a doubt one of the better places to eat and drink locally. There building work is now complete with extra hotel rooms and a private dinning area. A extremely well run establishment, very clean and tidy with ample staff. The food is of the highest standard and well presented. Service was perfect and the bill was not a shock. The only down side is they do not take bookings so a family Sunday lunch can leave you waiting around for a table.

Great pub off the A12, I believe it also doubles up as a hotel, open planned kitchen facing the bar & eating area, good buzzy atmosphere.

Simple very good pub food & check the specials, normally I shy away but I chose the Morrocan lamb with cous cous, perfectly slow cooked & tasty, my customer had the seabass & salmon with cream & leeks - gutted I didn't order it, all the fish dishes looked amazing. The puddings are all home made, I chose the lemon meringue pie...one of the best I've had recently. I'd be glad to come back if I was in the area.
