How to visit Vindolanda Roman Fort and Museum and the Roman Army Museum. Each year the Vindolanda Trust offers three excavation places to young scholars who apply for a bursary. The bursary pays for their accommodation and excavation fees and membership to the friends of Vindolanda. Artist Fiona Drake has painted a beautiful scene of Vindolanda and gifted the oil painting to us to raise funds towards our survival appeal.

Slightly off the track of the wall walk but certainly worth making a detour. Foundations of the Fort buildings can be clearly seen with information provided explaining each. The highlight for us though, were the letters in the museum written by the soldiers garrisoned there, which were discovered on site. They throw a fascinating light on what life was like for the centurions and the types of things they were requesting.
There is a cafe on site too.
Good parking and an accessible entrance.
Don't forget to visit its sister museum, The Roman Army museum near the wall itself - another fabulous

I spent a riveting couple of hours here today. I can’t think why I’ve never been here before. The site is extraordinary, the museum really interesting and the cafe to die for - all set in beautiful surroundings. But the thing that really brought it to life was the amazing guide, his knowledge of history and his presentation was the best. I learnt… a huge amount about history of this region, the Romans, their life style ( lots of social history too) . Plus the fact that they are still uncovering new treasures. I love the fact that the Romans were so diverse, Syrians Gauls and

We had a fantastic day here with two of our children, aged 8 and 11. So much to see both outdoors and in the fabulous museum.
Special mention to guide Helen (lady with the blue hair) who goes over and above to… make everyone feel welcome and supported during their visit. The warmth of her greeting, not just to us but to everyone, was outstanding. While there we witnessed her giving directions to a couple of lost bikers and also helping a family who hadn't realised they couldn't bring their dog into Vindolanda by giving them lots of options for other sites they could visit nearby on Hadrian

What a place - absolutely fascinating and so well done. The cafe was lovely with very reasonably priced food, great museum and shop with plenty for littler ones at good prices, and the 'finds' itself are just astonishing. Only thing that would be better is the main centre closed before the site, so we left at 4.45ish but couldn't go to the toilet before our 2 hour journey! Would be good (and visitor friendly) to have some loos that are accessible on the way out!

A 'world class' experience ... a sometimes overused term that can justifiably be applied to this site. It combines ongoing excavation with an extensive array of clearly interpreted remains of Roman military forts of different periods together with their associated civilian settlements. This is further supported with an outstanding modern and dynamic museum exhibiting some of the finds that have made this site so famous, accompanied by a delightful cafe with inside and outside seating in an idyllic location.

Fantastic museum and grounds, with excavations still in progress. If the weather is dreary, take heart that the indoor exhibits still make the drive worthwhile. The restaurant on site has a great selection of food--more than I expected--and the prices are great. I had a good sized ploughman's platter on £5, with a slice of cake for about £2. They even had a section of gluten free pre-packaged foods.

Visited on a late December afternoon and wish we had longer as loads to see. Unfortunately we were kicked out at 4PM despite what iit says here and the website (5PM).
Also alarmingly the paths around the fort excavations were so icy that it was a real hazard to negotiate with little sign of salt being put down. A couple with a wheelchair were in real danger going down the steep icy path to the museum. Back in the US this would be a lawsuit in the making and reason for me only giving 3 stars. On entering the museum I asked about this as the journey from the parking area was also tortuous. The staff

I wasn't expecting much from Vindolanda as I thought it was just ruins. But it surprised and impressed me mostly because starting in late spring into early fall, the ruins are actively being excavated looking for treasures from 2000 years ago. While we visited the last week of active excavations, the head archaeologist was more than happy to answer questions and provide information about their work and discoveries. One of which they had the previous month discovering a buried 30 inch sword that had already been cleaned and put in the museum. Better yet, they use volunteers to help with excavation
