In Western scientific terms, acupuncture works by stimulating the brain and spinal cord to produce natural chemicals in the body. These chemicals include endorphins to relieve pain, melatonin to encourage sleep, and serotonin to enhance feelings of well-being, therefore assisting in the body's natural healing process.
Services
Acupuncture is a part of Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM) which also includes other treatment regimes such as Herbal Medicine, T'ai Chi and Qi Gong (exercise, breathing and meditation), Tui Na (Chinese Massage), Cupping, Moxibustion and Auricular Therapy. Acupuncture has been practiced in China and other Eastern Countries for thousands of years and has become increasingly popular in the UK over the past decade.
In 2009, the National Institute for Health and Clinical Excellence (NICE) recommended that acupuncture should be made available on the NHS, as a cost-effective short-term treatment for the management of early, persistent non-specific lower back pain. As well as back pain, acupuncture has proven to be effective for a wide range of conditions.
Treatments are aimed at regulating and harmonizing the body, allowing the body's natural self-healing mechanisms (immune system) to work uninhibited. As well as acupuncture, a variety of techniques may be incorporated within the treatment session depending on the individual needs of the patient.

Auricular Therapy, also known as ear acupuncture, is a strong and powerful treatment that can be used in combination with acupuncture or as a stand-alone therapy.Specific points are chosen on the ear that connect with many aspects of the body including anatomical location and internal organs. It has been shown to be beneficial to help stop addictions by reducing cravings and withdrawal symptoms.
Acupuncture needles are much finer than needles used for injections and blood tests. Needle insertion is generally painless, and once in you may experience something that is called the 'Qi sensation' (De Qi). This sensation varies from person to person and is often described as a tingling, dull, heavy, numb, warm or achy sensation.

The Clinic is conveniently situated for bus and rail links. Northallerton town centre has ample car parking and there is one hour free (disk) parking available directly outside the clinic and two hour paid parking opposite the clinic on the other side of the green.
