Friction Stir Welding (FSW) was invented in 1991 by Wayne Thomas at TWI. The process operates below the melting point of the workpieces which leads to very high strength and minimal distortion. The process is used in many sectors including: aerospace, railway rolling stock, automotive and ship building.
